Sun, Yuma, Ariz. Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News Jun. 4, 2006 - Add La Jolla Suites & Spa to the list of
new hotels planned for Yuma, this one to be built on the property north
of 16th Street along Redondo Center Drive between Arizona Western
College Career Center and the Arco AM/PM. Realtor Colleen Newman confirmed last week that the property,
a 13-plus-acre parcel, has been purchased by Jerry and Peggy Philipps,
owners of La Fuente Inn in Yuma and other hotel properties else- where.
The planned five-star hotel will have 172 suites, among them
six presidential and bridal suites of 1,200 square feet each. It also
will have a 5,000-square-foot Class 1 restaurant, an 8,000-square-foot
meeting room that will hold up to 600 people, an Olympic-size swimming
pool and a 5,000-square-foot spa room. The design will be terraced to fit the slope of the parcel,
Newman said. She said the owners hope to start grading by Nov. 1 with a
targeted completion in mid-2007. Other new hotels either in the planning stages or under
construction in the Yuma area include the Wingate Inn and Marriott
TownPlace Suites on Hotel Hill; Holiday Inn Express and Candlewood
Suites at Avenue 3E and Interstate 8; the Hilton Garden Inn and
Conference Center along the riverfront; and the Microtel in Wellton.
