AUSTIN, Texas January 19, 2006 Texas A&M University recently awarded a Special Service Award to alumni Ken Gorzycki, 77, Director of Golf Course Management at Barton Creek Resort & Spa in Austin, Texas. This prestigious award was presented to Gorzycki at an annual meeting of the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences January 11 in College Station, Texas. World renown turf specialist, Dr. James B. Beard, A&M professor emeritus, President and Chief Scientist at the International Sports Turf Institute, attended the event to honor his former student.

A graduate of A&M Soil and Crop Sciences department, Gorzycki has enhanced agronomic programs at A&M as well as in the golf industry for nearly 30 years. Gorzycki is well recognized in professional circles, has helped other golf superintendents grow professionally, holds several certifications and professional memberships, and proudly reflects his agronomic heritage from Texas A&M University. Kens professional accomplishments speak for themselves. Barton Creek would not be the golf destination it is without his contributions, said G. Gorzyckis contributions to A&M are many. For years, Ken has hired scores of students for summer internships and full time professional positions within ClubCorp in Texas and other states, said Dr. Dudley T. Smith, A&M professor.  He attracts and hires some of the best graduates in Soil and Crop Sciences and promotes them from within. Through the Senior Seminar program, Gorzycki provides mock interview experiences for students, following a corporate interview outline. He gives students immediate feedback, and offers suggestions on how they can improve their interview skills. He has lectured at A&M on professionalism and the job search, incorporating experiences with practical advice on topics such as work expectations, teamwork, and ethics. Smith noted, People outside this field may not understand what an honor it is for Ken to have Dr. James B. Beard, an important mentor to Ken, attend this event. Dr. Beard is the most prominent turf specialist in the world today. He is the author of eight books on this subject, and is a highly sought after international consultant.

Gorzycki has an established record of professional accomplishment, from overseeing a top-tier, 54-hole golf course in Florida to presently serving as Director of Golf Course Management at Barton Creek Resort & Spa. This resort in Austin, Texas features four championship courses Fazio Canyons, Fazio Foothills, Crenshaw Cliffside and Palmer Lakeside that continue to receive national recognition. All four courses have achieved the Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary designation, and Fazio Canyons is the first resort course in Texas to achieve the prestigious certification as an Audubon International Signature Sanctuary after meeting strict environmental criteria. Of the estimated 16,000 golf courses in the United States, only 2,300 are affiliated with the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary program and less than 50 courses in the world have achieved the highly coveted Signature status.
