Predicting Restaurant Covers and Staffing at Pan Pacific;

SAN FRANCISCO, January 6, 2005 – The Pan Pacific Hotel San Francisco, owned by a partnership between Oxford Lodging and Goldman Sachs, recently completed a trial implementation and purchased a novel hospitality forecasting software developed by Carnus Systems.

After carefully monitoring the results throughout a 60-day period, the web-based software proved to be successful at forecasting daily meal period covers at the hotel’s “PACIFIC” restaurant with a daily overall average accuracy of 90%.  Similar accuracy was observed with room service and banquet forecasting, allowing the hotel to appropriately staff and reduce costs.  The forecasting results are expected to save the Pan Pacific Food and Beverage department an estimated 4% of labor cost during the first year of implementation.  This savings estimate is expected to increase in successive years. “The Carnus Forecaster is on the cutting edge of technology and it is an imperative tool we all must use,” says Sileshi Mengiste, General Manager at the Pan Pacific Hotel San Francisco.

The Carnus Forecaster is the result of over two years of research and development based on a forecasting methodology specifically designed for hospitality-based operations. Using the most powerful artificial intelligence engines available, Carnus Systems’ software is uniquely suited to forecast for hotel, restaurant, and casino operations, taking time-dependent, non-linear data patterns into account.  “Using the Carnus Forecaster’s accurate cover and labor staffing forecasts, we will save on labor cost and enhance service quality at the Pan Pacific,” says Maki Bara, Partner of Oxford Lodging.

As demonstrated at the Pan Pacific, Carnus Systems’ technologies have been shown to outperform linear forecasting techniques, such as manual forecasting based on capture ratios and regression modeling.  Furthermore, the software is custom-tailored to fit any business model.  Despite the power of Carnus Systems’ forecasting software, its ease-of-use has been applauded by users at the Pan Pacific.  “Our clients at the Pan Pacific were most impressed with the ease-of-use; users need only log on to our web site, upload select in-house files, select a department, then view the highly accurate eight-day forecasts they desire,” says Timothy D’Auria, Director of Data Analytics for Carnus Systems.

According to Vicky Lee, CEO of Carnus Systems, “We are on the brink of a revolution within the hospitality industry.  For the first time, users will be able to peer into the future to make strong management decisions that will benefit their customers as well as their bottom line.”
