NEW ORLEANS, Feb. 13, 2006 -- In 1838, a young French Quarter apothecary,
Antoine Amadee Peychaud, concocted a drink of Brandy and bitters as a pain
reliever that was served in a French egg cup called a "coquetier," which
became the word, "cocktail," and has remained a mainstay in bars and restaurants
in New Orleans and around the world.
Tales of the Cocktail celebrates the history and spirit of the cocktail on July 19-23, 2006 with stars from around the world including Carson Kressley of Bravo's "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," NPR's "Kitchen Sisters," Chef Tyler Florence and master mixologist Dale DeGroff. The Hotel Monteleone is the headquarters hotel and will feature special rates and packages during the event. "Ever since Peychaud served his original spirited remedy that became the cocktail and made New Orleans famous, bars and restaurants have been exploring the varieties of the classic drink and ways to serve them," said Ann Rogers, founder of Tales of the Coctktail. Tales of the Cocktail features book signings, cooking and cocktail mixing demos, seminars and discussions, dinner pairings, themed cocktail parties and more with the country's hottest chefs, authors, bartenders, cocktail experts and celebrities. Events include The Southern Comfort Cocktail Tour, a walking tour of historic French Quarter bars and restaurants, seminars such as "Classic New Orleans Cocktails," "Get the Hot Dish," which explores current trends in flavors, and "Pairing Cocktails and Food." Phil Greene, an authority and descendant of the Peychaud family of New Orleans will present the history of Absinthe. Tales of the Cocktail is produced by The New Orleans Culinary and Cultural Preservation Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds to benefit the hospitality industry and to preserve the rich history of the restaurants and bars in New Orleans.
