YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, May 4, 2005 - Xanterra Parks & Resorts,
the operator of lodging, restaurants, gifts shops and activities in Yellowstone,
is gearing up for the summer by hiring more than 3,000 seasonal employees.
For 2005, the company is placing extra emphasis on hiring Americans as
limits on work visas will make it more difficult to attract international
workers.
"Just as Yellowstone is a special vacation destination for people worldwide, the park has also attracted a decidedly international flavor among our seasonal employees," said Jim McCaleb, general manager of Xanterra Parks & Resorts in Yellowstone. "We'll still have many workers from east and west, north and south. The surroundings are fantastic and the camaraderie among employees lasts a lifetime." A wide variety of jobs exists including those in the areas of lodging, maintenance, food service, campground management, accounting, housekeeping, human resources, interpretation, laundry, marina, entertainment, reservations, retail, security, transportation and others. The "perfect" worker needs only to have a good attitude, willingness to work hard and a little flexibility in his or her schedule. It also helps to enjoy things like hiking, backpacking, horseback-riding, canoeing, fishing and relaxing, because these are the off-hours activities enjoyed by Xanterra employees. While the company needs employees who can work the traditional June through August summer season, it is also on the lookout for seasonal workers who have the flexibility to work the entire season, May through October. Xanterra hires many students, but senior and international workers have
become increasingly important to the company's recruiting strategy as college
summer breaks no longer coincide directly with the vacation season. Last
year, the company hired workers from all continents with countries in Eastern
Europe represented more heavily than others. Xanterra has also been
targeting seniors to fill seasonal positions for several years. The company
appreciates seniors' work ethic, experience, flexibility and ability to
work until the end of the season. Xanterra has tapped this market because
this growing segment of the population simply wants to work longer. Seniors
also possess diversity and wisdom that make for a more interesting workplace.
