Massachusetts Lodging Association Recognizes Hotel Marlowe's Earthsmart Eco Initiative


CAMBRIDGE, MASS  (March 22, 2005) – Hotel Marlowe, a luxury hotel on the banks of the Charles River in Cambridge, has earned the “Good Earthkeeping Program” award for their dedicated, company wide eco-friendly initiative.  The award was presented to Hotel Marlowe at the MLA’s annual Stars of the Industry Award Gala earlier this month.  Hotel Marlowe will now be entered to win the American Hotel & Lodging Association’s national award.

Hotel Marlowe’s Earthsmart Eco Initiative is a comprehensive program that extends into nearly every aspect of the hotel from operations to housekeeping to landscaping.   Hotel Marlowe’s initiative is supported directly by Kimpton Hotels’ Conservation Program.  Kimpton’s program has produced a savings of more than 200,000 gallons of water, prevents more than 26 tons of carbon dioxide, saves approximately 33 barrels of oil and helps eliminate the production of two grams of plutonium.

Locally, as a participant and leader in the Kimpton Conservation Program, Hotel Marlowe reduces water usage with low-flow showerheads, low flow aerators on sinks, and low water lavatories representing a savings of 270,800 gallons of water per year.   The hotel only changes linens and terry at check-out unless specifically requested by guests resulting in a reduction in chemicals used by their offsite laundry vendor and reduced costs for laundry services. 

The hotel’s Front Desk uses a paperless check-in process, all paper used is post-consumer recycled, unused newspapers and waste paper are recycled as well, and guestroom corridors are lighted with low wattage bulbs.  Housekeeping has switched from a four-chemical cleaning agent to the environmentally friendly H2Orange Cleaner, which is readily biodegradable, less toxic and “people safe.”  Even the ice melt used in the winter for the drive is pet, plant and environmentally friendly and reduces damage to the hotel’s landscaping over traditional salts and chemicals.

Hotel Marlowe’s Eco program information cards are even printed on recycled paper, which saved 30 trees, 3123 gallons of water, nine cubic yards of landfill space, 4074 kilowatt-hours of electricity and 2838 pounds of solid waste and greenhouse gasses from being introduced into the ecosystem. 

Guest service is in no way impeded by Hotel Marlowe’s eco-friendly efforts.   In fact, Hotel Marlowe is known for its high-level of service, attention to detail and dedication.  Morning coffee and tea service, evening wine hour and complimentary Wi-Fi are just a few examples of the thoughtful amenities and service provide by this AAA Four Diamond hotel.
