U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Names the Saunders Hotel Group
as an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year for its
Leadership in Energy Management

.

Boston, MA, March 10, 2005 The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has named The Saunders Hotel Group as an ENERGY STAR Partner of The Year for its outstanding contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and leadership in energy management. The Saunders Hotel Groups accomplishments will be recognized at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on March 15, 2005.

The Saunders Hotel Group will be honored for its commitment to and implementation of smart energy management practices and investments throughout its operations.  The Saunders Hotel Groups leadership on environmental stewardship dates back to the 1980s when the company first received international recognition for pioneering ecotourism.

Staff at all levels are involved in efforts to conserve energy: from Jeff Saunders, President and CEO, and Tedd Saunders, Co-owner and Executive Vice President, to the hotels general managers and departmental staff.

Some of Saunders energy improvement efforts include the purchase of ENERGY STAR qualified products, such as refrigerators, clock radios, and televisions for guestrooms, computers and fax machines for offices, and DVD players for in-room Eco-Channels.  Energy management systems, motion sensors, fluorescent lighting, heat pumps, ozone laundry systems, and low E windows also help contribute to dramatic reductions in energy consumption. In the last year The Saunders Hotel Group achieved an additional 11% energy savings even after a decade of initiatives.

Across the U.S., top companies and organizations are discovering the value of strategic energy management through participation in ENERGY STAR. Last year alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved about $10 billion on their energy bills while reducing greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 20 million cars.

We are extremely proud to receive this important recognition for our genuine commitment to energy efficiency and environmental leadership, said Tedd Saunders, Co-Owner and Executive VP for The Saunders Hotel Group.  We firmly believe that our success helps Preserve The Past and Protect The Future TM

The Partner of the Year Award is given to organizations to recognize their exemplary efforts in facility operations and for integrating energy efficiency into overall organizational strategies. These annual Award winners are selected from thousands of organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program.

As an ENERGY STAR Partner of The Year, The Saunders Hotel Group has distinguished itself by demanding superior energy performance in their business and seeing real results, said Kathleen Hogan, director of EPA's Climate Protection Partnerships Division. "Through ENERGY STAR, these Partners of The Year are leading a nationwide effort to protect our environment through improved energy efficiency."

The Saunders Hotel Groups leadership in energy performance complements my administrations commitment to making Boston a leader in green building practice, said Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.  I want to congratulate the Saunders for their ENERGY STAR Partner of The Year Award.
