 Management of Raffles Hotels in Cambodia Resolve
Labour Disputes; Affirms Willingness to Operate
within International Labour Standards


SINGAPORE, 20 September 2004 – The management of Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor in Siem Reap and Raffles Hotel Le Royal in Phnom Penh and labour union representatives have arrived at a settlement agreement resolving the labour dispute that arose between both parties in April 2004.  Union representatives from the Cambodian Tourism and Service Workers Federation (CTSWF), International Union of Food, Agriculture, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco an Allied Workers Association (IUF) and Solidarity Centre (ACILS) were present during the joint negotiations held on 12 September 2004 following which the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the hotel management and the hotel unions was signed.

Markland Blaiklock, Managing Director of Raffles Hotels & Resorts said, “The management of both Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor and Raffles Hotel Le Royal has always been sincere in wanting to resolve the outstanding issues in an amicable way.  Throughout the negotiations, we consistently acted in good faith and in accordance with the law.  We are pleased that we have arrived at a resolution that is acceptable to all parties concerned.”  

The MOU paves the way for majority of the staff terminated during the labor dispute in April to be re-hired at Raffles Grand Hotel d’ Angkor and Raffles Hotel Le Royal.

Ma Wei Pin, Regional Secretary of the IUF-Asia/Pacific said, "Amicably resolved, this settlement augurs well for the future of the two Raffles hotels in Cambodia and for the workers who make them distinctive.
