 Mark Hemstreet's Independently Owned
Shilo Inns Mark 30 Years

PORTLAND, OR – July 8, 2004 -  It was 30 years ago that Mark Hemstreet opened his first Shilo Inn on Northeast 82nd Avenue in Portland. Since then, Shilo Inns has grown to become one of the largest chains of independently owned hotels in the Western United States. Shilo Inns will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary all month long at all 42 Shilo locations.

“Our 30th Anniversary is an achievement we can all take pride in,” says Hemstreet. “I’d like to dedicate this achievement to all the hard-working, dedicated Shilo employees who helped make this day possible.”

In a day and age when other hotel chains are downsizing or selling out to large national chains, Shilo Inns continues to look for expansion opportunities. Shilo offers convenient locations in nine western states: Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah and Arizona. “Many of our Shilo Inns feature full service hotel facilities with restaurant, lounge, banquet and meeting rooms along with heated pools, spa, steam sauna, fitness facilities and much more,” explains Hemstreet. “And some of our newer locations offer spacious suites, for even more deluxe accommodations.”

Says Hemstreet, “Our growth and success are based upon the basic idea that people simply want their money’s worth when they travel. They know when they visit a Shilo Inn, they are going to receive clean, comfortable rooms and suites, as well as a number of other special free amenities all at a reasonable price.

Hemstreet and his staff have seen a lot of changes in the hospitality industry over the last 30 years. “It’s so much easier to travel today than it was 30 years ago,” recalls Hemstreet,  “and the Internet has really changed the way people plan their trips and vacations. But much of our success is due to the fact that we are able to keep pace with changes in the marketplace and changing consumer needs.” The advent of the Internet and the use of the personal computer have also prompted the adoption of Shilo’s Best Rate Guarantee. Using the Internet, travelers can access Shilo’s web site at, where they will find the guaranteed lowest rate to stay at any Shilo Inn. Unlike large national hotel chains that outsource various Internet-related services to overseas operations, Shilo handles all its Internet transactions right here at home. “We believe in keeping American jobs in America,” says Hemstreet proudly.

Another new change at Shilo Inns is the addition of low carbohydrate dining options to Shilo Restaurant’s menu. “Our adoption of a low carb menu is just one of the ways we’ve tried to respond to changing consumer needs,” says Hemstreet, “which is all a part of Shilo’s affordable excellence.”
