Tenth Lodging Conference to Feature Essentials
of Hotel Ownership Workshop
.
Lasky, Cauvin, Belmonte to focus on finances, franchising,
operational fundamentals during two-hour session

CHICAGO (Aug. 2, 2004) The Essentials of Hotel Ownership workshop is back by popular demand.

The workshop, created by Lodging Unlimited President and C.E.O. Morris Lasky, Lodging Unlimited West C.O.O. John Cauvin, and Steve Belmonte, President and C.E.O. of Hospitality Solutions LLC and partner in Belmonte/Lasky Asset Management LLC, will be held for the third time this year, this time at the Lodging Conference in Phoenix this fall.

The Lodging Conference, which Lasky co-founded and for which hes served as Chairman since its inception, will celebrate its 10th anniversary Sept. 28-Oct. 1 at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa. The Essentials of Hotel Ownership workshop, previously presented at New Yorks Waldorf-Astoria in April and June, will run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29, at the Biltmore.

The workshop was so well received in April and June that we decided to present it concurrently at the Lodging Conference in September, Lasky said. As was the case with the two previous Essentials workshops, this one will take a hard look at improving hotel real-estate value, franchising, and operational fundamentals, and will be conducted by me and my fellow workshop creators and business partners, John Cauvin and Steve Belmonte.

Lasky will kick off the workshop with his seminar, Getting the Most out of Your Hotel Investment. Known in the industry as the Hotel Doctor, Lasky will tap his 50 years of industry experience and offer up prescriptions for avoiding costly ownership/operating mistakes, boosting hotel real-estate value and improving bottom lines.

Cauvin will speak on Effective Hotel Reporting, a topic with which hes intimately familiar as a hotel owner/operator of the Windmill Inns & Suites hotel group for the past 20 years.

Basically my message is that you have to look at a lot more than the profit/loss statement to determine how well your hotel is performing, Cauvin said. As a longtime pilot, I like to use the analogy that Im the flight instructor and all my managers are pilots. Its my job to see that theyre reading the right gauges, as it were, and are up on all their skills to be flying their planethat is, operating their property successfully. In hotel operations, much like in flying an airplane, the secret to success is paying close attention to detailsand Ill discuss those details during my seminar.

Belmonte expects lively, interactive franchising seminar

Belmonte will reprise his seminar, Franchisor and Franchisee: The Ultimate Love/Hate Relationship.

Ill be focusing on issues like structuring a fair franchise agreement, are all franchisors the same, determining if a franchise is working, the benefits and pitfalls of changing flags, terminations, liquidated damages and more, said Belmonte, whos been on both sides of franchising as a hotel owner/operator and as the former President/C.E.O. of Ramada Franchise Systems. The first two sessions at the Waldorf were lively and interactive, and I expect this one to be the same.

Lasky, Cauvin and Belmonte will wrap up the Essentials of Hotel Ownership workshop with a brainstorming session that will include a question/answer period.
John, Steve and I are truly looking forward to presenting the Essentials workshop again, Lasky said. It met with great success and praise in New York, and were convinced it will be just as successful in Phoenix. Obviously, were presenting the right mix of information.
