Top Ten Pitfalls for Hoteliers To Avoid
When Managing Online Travel Sites
March 2004
  1. RATE PARITY AND RATE INTEGRITY IS QUESTIONABLE OR INNACURATE - When the consumer finds a different rate on every website they begin to wonder WHY, as well as question the integrity of both the hotel and the online travel website.  This will most likely turn the consumer away from your property.
  2. POOR SITE PLACEMENT - Failure to work with travel site market managers will most likely leave you off the front page of their website.  How often do YOU look past the front page?  How often do YOUR customers look past the front page?
  3. FINES IMPOSED BY BRAND - When you fail to attain rate parity, you run the risk of having lower rates than those that show up on your franchisor’s site. If you get caught, you run the risk of being financially penalized from within your organization.
  4. GROUP INTEGRITY VIOLATIONS, UPSETTING MEETING PLANNERS / GROUP LEADERS - If your rates are not set correctly and a rate shows up on an online travel website that is lower than you are selling to an association or group, you run the risk of losing their future business should they make this discovery.
  5. $1 ROOM RATE? – KEY STROKE ERRORS - Overwhelming manual data entry creates human errors.  When you manage the various extranets and are making five hundred or six hundred rate/allotment changes, key stroke errors will occur.
  6. OVER BOOKINGS AND FORGETTING TO YIELD A SITE COMPLETELY - If your hotel is overbooked, and by chance you forget to close out or yield a site, the consequences can be devastating both financially and operationally.
  7. FRUSTRATION WITH THE PROCESS CAUSING RESISTANCE TO YIELD - Hoteliers are not yielding their online travel websites as often as they should, because the process is simply daunting.  However, more frequent yielding will increase awareness which will surely lead to more money for the property.
  8. NOT KNOWING ALL MARKUPS AND PRICE ROUNDING METHODS -  Markup awareness must be part of your strategy.  Many hotels managing travel sites only have a general notion of how each website calculates markups.  Lack of attention to such a critical detail can be financially devastating to your hotel’s financial performance.
  9. LIMITED ONLINE EXPOSURE, NOT APPEARING ON ENOUGH WEBSITES - Do NOT restrict the number of websites your property uses.  Hotels who are overwhelmed with the amount of sites they deal with do not want to add any more --- however; limited exposure results in limited bookings.  Simply put, if the internet consumer can not find your hotel on an online travel website they will not book at your hotel.
  10. RESISTANCE TO CHANGE, THINKING YOU DO NOT NEED ONLINE CHANNELS - Hotels are quickly learning they need to put an ever-increasing amount of their attention to their web strategy and how they manage their online travel channels. Do not resist!  It is painless and is the natural progression of shift in the way hotels do business today and into the future.
Amazingly, today’s hotel can obtain and manage increased internet exposure through hundreds of websites, as well as maintain accurate and competitive Rate Parity through the use of the EZ YIELD.COM channel management system.
