Environmental Protection Agency Cites Grand Teton
Lodge Company's Pollution-Prevention Program as a
"Standard for Others to Follow"

GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK, Wyo., October 3, 2003 - Grand Teton Lodge Company (GTLC), operated of lodging, restaurants and activities in Grand Teton National Park, has been presented with an "Environmental Achievement Award" in recognition of its aggressive, multi-faceted pollution-prevention program.

This is the second time in recent months GTLC was recognized for its environmental programs. Last month Grand Teton Lodge Company became Wyoming's first member of the EPA's voluntary Environmental Performance Track program which recognizes top environmental performers that consistently exceed regulatory requirements, work closely with their communities and excel in protection of the environment and public health.

"This EPA Environmental Achievement Award recognizes that the Grand Teton Lodge Company not only fulfills its environmental requirements but goes beyond what is required, and it does so through its own initiative," said Robert Roberts, U.S. EPA Region 8 Administrator. "It is readily apparent that protecting and sustaining the natural environment is central to Grand Teton Lodge Company's mission, which sets environmental standards for others to follow."

The award was presented by the EPA to John Rutter, senior vice president and chief operating officer of the Grand Teton Lodge Company, during a breakfast ceremony Wednesday, October 1.

"Our pollution program has long gone beyond just recycling," said Rutter. "We believe the best way to deal with pollution is to prevent it in the first place. We are meeting that goal through an aggressive series of education programs and multi-tiered prevention programs. We appreciate greatly the support we receive from the EPA, and we believe we can continue to improve our practices in the future."

The company's Environmental Management System includes a commitment to promote renewable energy, elimination of waste, protection of wildlife habitat and environmental education. Beyond recycling, pollution prevention is the company's preferred method to reduce and eliminate waste in all facilities. Examples of the GTLC pollution prevention programs include a recycling program that collects 250 tons of material per year; shuttle service for guests and employees; installation of energy-efficient windows, lighting systems, appliances and electrical systems; water-saving fixtures; guest education program; asphalt recycling and re-use program; use of four-stroke engines in boats and a green purchasing policy.

Within Grand Teton National Park, Grand Teton Lodge Company manages lodging, restaurants, tours and activities at Jackson Lake Lodge, Jenny Lake Lodge and Colter Bay Village as well as the Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis Club in Jackson, Wyo., just outside the park.
