Richard Miller is Promoted to Executive Vice President,
World Travel & Tourism Council
December 11, 2003 - The promotion is in recognition of the outstanding contribution that Richard has made to the Council over the past thirteen years and follows the highly successful launch of the WTTC China Report, which was covered extensively by many of the leading media organisations in China and around the world.  After the launch, approximately 10,000 copies of the Report, in Chinese and in English, were downloaded from WTTCs web site.

Most recently, Richard Miller has been largely focused on managing and growing the production and delivery of WTTCs economic research, which, amongst other credits, now forecasts the impact of Travel & Tourism on the economies of over 160 countries worldwide.  Richard Miller is highly sought as an expert and speaker on the economics and policy issues of Travel & Tourism around the world.

Going forward, Richard Miller will assume the additional responsibility of establishing WTTCs China Initiative.  The initiative is expected to involve more than 40 top Chief Executives from major private sector organisations working hand-in-hand with the national and regional governments to bring about major changes that will enable China to maximise the benefits it receives from the effective development of Travel & Tourism.  (WTTC forecasts over 10% growth per annum in Chinese Travel & Tourism GDP over the next decade.)

The first top-level meeting of the China Initiative will take place in early 2004 in Shanghai and is being hosted by:

  • Edouard Ettedgui, Managing Director, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group
  • Giovanni Angelini, CEO & Managing Director, Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts
  • LJ Jia, Vice President & China Country Manager, American Express Company
WTTCs President, Jean-Claude Baumgarten, said: Richards contribution to WTTC over these past thirteen years has been broad and deep, from the economic research to policy analysis and more.  Thanks, in no small measure, to him, WTTCs mission to raise awareness of Travel & Tourisms economic contribution has gained recognition and credibility on a national and international level and has been translated into real policy change.  His work is now widely quoted by governments, professional analysts, the corporate sector and the media.

He continued: During one of the industrys most difficult periods, the SARS crisis, Richard Miller was able to capitalize on the situation and deliver one of WTTCs most important successes to date. I am delighted that he will be so closely involved in moving forward with the China initiative.
