The Malta Tourism Authority Appoints Michael Piscopo
as Director of North America; #1 Goal Increase
Tourism to Malta from the U.S. Market

MALTA, February 25, 2003 The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Piscopo, who is serving his second term as Director of North America for the MTA office in New York City.  Under his three-year contract, Mr. Piscopo will be responsible for promoting Malta as a travel destination in the U.S. and Canadian markets.  During his first term in this post, 1996 to 2000, significant increases in arrival figures were achieved.

Paul Galea, Director for Marketing & Promotion of the Malta Tourism Authority said, Mr. Piscopo succeeds Franco Debono, who served his three-year tenure and recently moved back to Malta.  Mr. Piscopo is a great asset to our organization and has a proven track record both at Head Office and in the various markets where he has served.  With his industry expertise and know-how, and the fact that he served as Director for the North American market before, our choice was

easy.  We are certain that Mr. Piscopo is the right man for the job and look forward to his coming achievements.

Prior to the MTA, Mr. Piscopo worked with the National Tourism Organization of Malta (NTOM) as Advertising and Public Relations Executive, in charge of all marketing and communications initiatives.  In 1992, Mr. Piscopo was appointed Overseas Director for the Benelux and Scandinavian markets, covering Holland, Belgium, Luxemburg, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland, and achieved substantial growth in tourist arrivals to Malta from all countries.

Mr. Piscopo said, I wanted to come back to the U.S., as I find it to be different, more stimulating and challenging than any of our European markets, where Malta is an already established holiday destination.  I am eager to continue the good work of the past years, helping more North American travelers to discover my wonderful homeland.  My main objective remains the same as before to increase tourism to Malta from America and Canada.

After his first Directorship for MTA North America, completed in 2000, Mr. Piscopo moved back to Malta and was named Senior Manager within the Marketing and Promotion Division of MTA at the Head Office in Valletta.  In July 2001, he was appointed Director in charge of the newly-created Digital Media Division, where he was responsible for developing Maltas official tourism website www.visitmalta.com and other Internet-based marketing.
