Executive Chef Jerry Quinn of South Beach
Fame Opens The Black Duck at
The Park South Hotel, NYC
NEW YORK Jan 3, 2002 -  The Black Duck, a 75-seat restaurant and lounge, is now open and serving Pan-Atlantic bistro fare at Manhattans new Park South Hotel, a boutique property located on 28th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues.  With the look and feel of a neighborhood bistro, The Black Duck offers guests a relaxing and welcoming ambiance and an unpretentious menu created by acclaimed South Beach Chef Jerry Quinn who is responsible for establishing the reputation of Miami Beachs A Fish Called Avalon as one of the areas most popular dining spots.

Chef Quinn, who trained under world-renowned chefs such as Roger Rouget and Allan Susser, has traveled the globe to study the flavors, textures and styles of Asian, French, American and Indian cuisine, among others.  A Fish Called Avalons Caribbean-influenced seafood has been featured in The New York Times and Bon Appetite, among others.  Quinn has won numerous awards, including the Where Magazine Visitors Choice Award for best food in Miami.

A sampling of the Black Duck menu includes:

Appetizers:

  • Rock Shrimp Crab Cake with toasted pistachio Key Lime Weri Weri pepper vinaigrette;
  • Seared Diver Scallops with vegetable confetti, red pepper and garlic herb aioli;
  • Grilled King Prawn with roasted corn, spicy pumpkin, julienne of fried leeks and cilantro pesto.
Entrees:
  • Sesame Seared Tuna with Japanese rice, julienne of vegetables, wasabi, pickled ginger and ponzu;
  • Porcini & Herb Crusted Salmon with wilted spinach, wild mushrooms and sautéed baby carrots;
  • The Black Duck: crisp Long Island duck, pepper crusted, black forest cherries, Yukon Gold mash, roasted baby vegetables with the restaurants own Black Duck Rum;
  • Char-grilled Filet Mignon with Bernaise, Portabello, pomme frittes and a cabernet-shiraz reduction.
The Black Duck is housed in a turn-of-the-century, renovated brownstone adjacent to the Park South.  The restaurant interiors evoke the feel of old New York and includes hard wood floors, an alabaster bar, eclectic collection of vintage artwork, Victorian mermaid chandeliers and an intimate lounge with fireplace surrounded by French doors.

The Black Duck is named in honor of the rum running boat that was involved in a notorious incident in 1929. The vessel was on one of its "hooch" smuggling runs off the coast of Newport, Rhode Island, when it was engaged by a Coast Guard patrol.  A number of the Black Duck's crew died in the shooting and the incident caused a public outcry.  The resulting congressional hearings eventually helped bring prohibition to a close in 1933.

The Black Duck and Park South Hotel are part of the Newport-based Atlantic Stars Hospitality Group.  Other Atlantic Stars properties include: The Avalon Majestic Hotel and South Seas Hotel in South Beach, Miami; the Harborside Inn, Jailhouse Inn, Yankee Peddler Inn and Newport Gateway Hotel in Newport, Rhode Island; and the Pequot Hotel on Marthas Vineyard.  Atlantic Stars also operates several cruise vessels, including the schooner Madeleine and motor yacht Rum Runner II, which offer classic day cruises in Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay.  The company also owns and operates Arabella, a 160-foot luxury sailing vessel providing seven-day cruises throughout the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and four- and six-night summer cruises in New England.
