Carlos Lopes is the new Managing Director at the Hotel Bel-Air, in Los Angeles, replacing Frank Bowling who resigned in February. Lopes, a native of Lisbon, was until recently the Chief Operating Officer of Rockresorts, a brand he resurrected two years ago. He also was Co-Chairman of Unique Hotels and Resorts. Prior to becoming an entrepreneur, Lopes was a senior marketing officer first with Four Seasons, later with Rosewood. 

Rudy Tauscher has left Trump International New York where he has been replaced by Tom Downing. Downing was previously the Director of Rooms Operations at Trump and was promoted. Tauscher had been at the helm of Trump International since 1997, following a two-year stint as Resident Manager at the Peninsula New York.

Mark Hodgdon has left his position of Managing Director at Salt Lake City¹s Grand America Hotel now that the 2002 Winter Olympics are over and ownership has assumed responsibility for their business. He is not the only one leaving, as others departed including Thomas Ryan, Executive Chef, Rebecca Cecil, Public Relations Manager, Clinton Fowler, Banquet Manager. Steven Holding, son of owner Earl Holding, has been named General Manager.

Dietmar Wertanzl has been appointed Senior Vice President of Fleet Operations, for Celebrity Cruises. He joins from Crystal Cruises, where he was Senior Vice President of Hotel Operations, and had a nine-year career.  Prior to that, Wertanzl logged six years with Royal Viking Line. He also was involved in the initial start-up phase of Celebrity. 

At Ritz-Carlton, General Manager Todd Harris (a Cornell Hotel School graduate) moves from the Ritz-Carlton Seoul to be the opening General Manager at the soon to be Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch Resort near Vail, Colorado. His successor in Seoul will be Charles de Foucault, currently the General Manager of the Ritz-Carlton Marina Del Rey.  Ritz-Carlton General Manager Michel Goget moves from Dearborn to Tysons Corner. He replaces Michael Carsh, who moves from Tysons Corner to Key Biscayne. The opening General Manager at Key Biscayne, John Cotrel, was promoted to Ritz-Carlton's corporate office as Vice President of Standards.  Goget originally joined Ritz-Carlton in September 1999, after five years in Europe with Dolce International, and four years at Disneyland Paris.

Jim Hollister is General Manager of the 353-room Wyndham Buttes Resort in Tempe, Arizona.  Hollister comes from West Hollywood, where he was the General Manager of the Wyndham Bel Age. Prior to that, he was the General Manager of the Wyndham San Diego at Emerald Plaza for five years. 

Jennifer McMahon has been appointed Director of Sales and Marketing for Boston¹s Nine Zero, opening in June.  Prior to joining Nine Zero, she served as Director of Sales and Marketing for the Muse in New York. Before the Muse, she was Director of Group Sales for the Roosevelt  also in New York.  McMahon is familiar with the Boston market, having served as Director of Group Sales and Director of Catering at the Charles, Director of Catering at the Hyatt Regency Cambridge, and Catering Manager at the Royal Sonesta.  Also at Nine Zero, Donna Winkley has been hired as Senior Sales Manager.  Prior to joining, she served as a Sales Manager for the Westin Copley Place Boston. Rounding up the sales team at Nine Zero is Kanako Hachiya, Sales Manager, who comes from the Hiltons of Boston, and the Westin Copley Place. 

Joseph Nase has been named General Manager of Aqua at the St Regis Monarch Beach, replacing Ronan Hénaff who left for New York, and Patrick Yumul. Prior to joining Aqua, Nase served as Director of Wine & Spirits for the Pebble Beach Company and, before that, worked as Wine Director of the four-star Lespinasse in New York. His wife Janice Nase joins as Assistant Manager at Aqua. 

Sylvain Boussard has been hired by Orient-Express as Food and Beverage Manager for the Hotel Monasterio del Cusco (a Leading Hotel of the World), in Peru.  For the past two years, he was in a similar position at the Bora Bora Pearl Beach Resort in Bora Bora.

Paul Hanley has been named Ramada Franchise Systems President & Chief Executive Officer, replacing Steven Belmonte, who is leaving the company. Prior to that, Hanley was President & Chief Operating Officer of Regent International Hotels from 1996 to 2000, Executive Vice President of Operations for Radisson Hotels International from 1994 to 1996 and Vice President of Sales for Radisson from 1993 to 1994.  Hanley, 52, received his bachelor of science in hotel administration from Cornell University. 

Sedona Resort Management has named William Dougherty Director of Sales for the Tides Inn. Prior to joining the Tides Inn, Dougherty spent ten years at The Plaza, New York, most recently as Director of Sales. 

Clyde Min has been named Vice President of Hospitality for Colonial Williamsburg. He joins from the Disney organization where he spent seven years in Japan and Orlando. Min previously was the General Manager of the Marina Mandarin Singapore, following a stint as General Manager of the Hotel Hana Maui, when that property was managed by Rosewood. Daniel Mann is gone as General Manager of the Williamsburg Lodge and Conference Center.

Dominique Marty has been transferred by Interstate Hotels to Hotel Manager of the 900-room Westin Bonaventure in Los Angeles, from the Laguna Cliffs Marriott in Dana Point. Marty has been with Interstate since 1993, following a nine-year stint with Ritz-Carlton.

David Dudar, a Cornell hotel school graduate, has been named head of marketing for Rockresorts and the Vail Resorts Lodging Company. He most recently was Director of Marketing for Park Hyatt Hotels. 

Kevin Ball has been appointed General Manager of the Peery Hotel in Salt Lake City by the Boutique Hotel Group. He was previously General Manager at the Bodega Bay Lodge and Spa and Hotel Manager at the Stanford Park Hotel in Menlo Park. The Boutique Hotel Group has named Michael Murphy Executive Vice President and General Counsel. Prior to joining, he was the Chief Executive Officer of Triquest. He also was Senior Vice President, Acquisitions for Boykin Lodging Company.

Uwe Roehricht has been appointed Executive Assistant Manager in charge of Food and Beverage at the Tremont Plaza and its sister property the Tremont Suites, in Baltimore. He most recently was Director of Operations for De Castro Restaurants, and had spent two and a half years  as Director of Food and Beverage at the Harbor Court. 

Ralph Noblet has been named Assistant Food and Beverage Manager at the Four Seasons Dallas. Previously he was the Director of Food and Beverage at the Méridien Dallas for two and a half years.

At the Sofitel Lafayette Square, due to open two blocks away from the White House in June, Pamela Feick has been hired as Director of Sales and Marketing. She joins from Washington¹s Jefferson Hotel where she held the same position. Still at the Sofitel Lafayette Square, Nicolas Sangros has been named Restaurant Director, in charge of launching the hotel gourmet restaurant, which will use French Three-Michelin-Starred chef Antoine Westermann as consulting chef. Sangros, who worked several years at Michel Richard¹s Citronelle and at Jean-Georges, was most recently the General Manager of Annabelle¹s in Naples, Florida.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts announced the appointment of Kevin Kelly, Executive Director, business transient sales.  Kelly joins Fairmont from Wyndham International where he held the position of Vice President - Business Travel since April 1999. Prior to that, he spent eleven years with Hilton Hotels Corporation. 

Roger Carr, head of security and locks group Chubb, is to take over from Sir Ian Prosser as chairman of Six Continents, when Prosser retires next year, after fifteen years with the company.

At the Pinehurst Company, Jack Bickart, former Daufuskie Island Vice-President of Sales will move to Barton Creek, where he becomes Vice-President of Sales. Terry Pate, formerly Vice-President of Sales at Barton Creek, is now Regional Vice-President of Sales for The Pinehurst Company. 

Jean-Christophe Basseau, Executive Chef at the Ritz-Carlton Palm Beach, is building up his culinary team: Lamberto Valdez joined as Restaurant Chef.  He had worked with Basseau ten years ago at the former Méridien Newport Beach, where he was most recently the Executive Sous Chef. Christopher Mayo, who has worked the past ten years at the Ritz-Carlton Tysons Corner, joined the Ritz-Carlton Palm Beach as Banquet Chef. 

Robert McPherrin has been appointed Regional Director of Sales and Marketing for Six Continents in the North East region. Prior to this appointment, McPherrin was the Executive Director of Hotel Marketing for Treasure Island in Las Vegas. Prior to his job at Treasure Island, he was the Director of Marketing for the Inter-Continental Chicago.

Viva Resorts has promoted Omar Estévez to Vice President of Operations.  Prior to his promotion, Estévez was the Regional Director for Viva Resorts in Mexico. He originally joined the company in 1988, as Resident Manager of Viva Resorts¹ Club Viva Dominicus Beach.

William Sherer is Sommelier at Atelier, the restaurant of the soon-to-open Ritz-Carlton New York at Central Park South. He was previously the Corporate Sommelier at Aqua in San Francisco. 

Asia & the Pacific
Legendary hotelier Georg Rafael is leaving his post as Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. Rafael¹s namesake hotel group, which included such landmarks as the Hotel Rafael in Munich, the Hotel du Rhône in Geneva, and the Mark in New York, was sold to Mandarin Oriental in 2000.

Jonas Schuermann has been named General Manager of the Mandarin Oriental Macau. He was previously Resident Manager at the Oriental, Bangkok.

Michael Gibb, former General Manager of Mandarin Oriental¹s Excelsior in Hong Kong, has been named General Manager of the Mutiara Kuala Lumpur. 

Anthony Ross, an Australian, has taken over the Beaufort Sentosa Island in
Singapore. Previously he served in the corporate office of Mandarin Oriental
in Hong Kong and Monte Carlo and Pan Pacific in Australia, Kuala Lumpur
and Singapore.

Starwood has transferred Frederic Habert from General Manager of the Sheraton Moorea in French Polynesia to Hotel Manager at the 787-room Westin Maui.

Thomas Rooch has joined the Portman Ritz-Carlton, Shanghai, as Assistant Food and Beverage Director. He transfers from the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua. 

Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts have promoted Lilian Lui as Regional Director of Sales Asia. She was previously Director of Sales at the Pudong Shangri-La Hotel, Shanghai. 

Dean Winter has returned to the Mandarin-Oriental Hong Kong as Executive Assistant Manager in charge of Food and Beverage. He had left the company for a few years to take charge of Quaglino¹s and Sartoria in London, two of Sir Terence Conran¹s largest and most successful restaurants. 

At Hong Kong¹s Grand Stanford Inter-Continental, Christine Mechtler, who was previously Director of Marketing at the Kowloon Shangri-La, has been named Director of Sales and Marketing.

Stanley Wong, who was for several years the Executive Sous Chef at the
Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong, is now the Executive Chef at Tan Da in New York.

Hubert Klemenz has been appointed as General Manager of the Gran Melia Jakarta. He was previously the General Manager of the Melia Hanoi.  Fredrick Arul has been named General Manager of the Melia Purosani. He was previously the group's Corporate Director of Food and Beverage, based in Spain.

Andrew Nasskau has been appointed General Manager of the Ritz-Carlton
Kuala Lumpur. He transfers from the Portman Ritz-Carlton, Shanghai, where he was Director of Sales  and Marketing. 

Nancy Lee is now Director of Sales and Marketing at Shangri-La¹s regional sales office in Singapore. She was previously Director of Travel Industry Sales, for the three Shangri-La properties in Singapore.

The Siam Inter-Continental Bangkok has named Gerard Verhoeven as General Manager. He joins from the Hotel Inter-Continental Phnom Penh.

Srayut Ekahitanonda has joined the Regent Bangkok as Director of Sales.  He joins from the Westin Banyan Tree, Bangkok, where he was the Director of Sales and Marketing. 

Jerry Philps has joined the new JW Marriott Phuket Spa and Resort as General Manager. He was previously the General Manager of the Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort on Maui. 

Hotel Inter-Continental Hong Kong¹s Managing Director Jennifer Fox announced the appointment of Geoff Haviland as Chef of Yü, the hotel¹s seafood restaurant. A native of Australia, he most recently was Executive Chef of The London, outside Melbourne. 

Yngvar Stray has been named General Manager of the Sheraton Shenyang Lido, which is scheduled to open this month. A native Norwegian, Stray was most recently the Hotel Manager of the St Regis Beijing. 

At the Ritz-Carlton Seoul, the fourth Executive Chef in three years is Rudolf Eichele, who comes from the  Sheraton Luxury Collection in Phuket. He used to work in Seoul as Executive Sous Chef at the Westin Chosun.

Six Continents announced the appointment of Paul Clark as Director of Human Resources - Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific. Clark has worked with Six Continents for over 21 years. Most recently he was Director of Divisional Human Resources, Compensation and Benefits, based at the Six Continents Hotel office in Singapore. 

Andreas Knuessi is the new Director of Food and Beverage at Shangri-La¹s Tanjung Aru Resort in Kota Kinabalu. He replaces Pascal Massé, who left the company.

Jacques Roy has been appointed General Manager for the soon to open (summer of 2002) ultraluxe Sheraton Bora Bora Nui Resort. A Frenchman, Roy previously served as General Manager of the Real Inter-Continental Tegucigalpa in Honduras.

Thierry Brovelli is taking over from Eric Leprevost as Director of Food and Beverage at the Inter-Continental Tahiti. He previously held the same position at the Inter-Continental Moorea, also in French Polynesia.

In New Delhi, Executive Chef Bruno Cerdan moves a few  blocks from the Oberoi to the Imperial.

Andrew Wilson has been named General Manager of MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Darwin, Australia. He comes to MGM Grand after a long tenure with Burswood Island Resort and Casino in Perth, Australia, where he was most recently the Chief Operating officer. 

Africa & the Middle East
Yekutiel Federman, the founder of the Dan Hotel Chain, died. >From 1945 to recently, he grew Israel¹s Dan Hotel Group from one to thirteen hotels, employing 9,000 staff.

In South Africa, Elke Menz is now Regional Director of Sales and Marketing for Arabella Hotels. She previously held a similar position for Accor Africa.

Eric Lustman, 37, has been appointed Vice President - Sales and Marketing for Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts Africa/Indian Ocean area, based in Paris. He was formerly Marketing Director for Le Méridien¹s Europe/North Africa area. Lustman joined Méridien in March 2000, coming from the Lucien Barrière Hotel Group.

At the Millennium Hotel Abu Dhabi, Graham Bradford has been appointed to the position of Executive Assistant Manager. He was previously from Millennium Baileys London where he was Acting General Manager. Min Min Wong has been named Director of Marketing Communications. She comes from the Grand Copthorne Waterfront in Singapore. Vivienne Willison has been appointed Director of Sales & Marketing. She was formerly Director of Sales at Millennium Knightsbridge Hotel London. 

General Manager Jean-Pierre Mainardi has been transferred by Hilton International from the posh Langham Hilton London, to the slightly less spiffy Nile Hilton in Cairo.

Also in Cairo, Hervé Potus is coming to the Four Seasons as Executive Pastry Chef. Potus is transferring from the Regent of Kuala Lumpur. He also held the same position  for the Shangri-la Kuala Lumpur and the  Marina Mandarin Singapore. Potus started his career at world-famous Bernachon in Lyons in 1983. 

Europe
General Manager Duncan Palmer is leaving the Savoy Hotel Group, which he joined in 1995. He ran the Savoy until September 1997, when he was transferred to the group¹s crown jewel, the Connaught. Palmer previously logged thirteen years with Mandarin Oriental in Macau, Manila and Jakarta.

Thierry Alexandri is the new General Manager of the Copthorne Charles de Gaulle in Paris. A former Marriott man, he replaces Philippe Ganier, who left to be the opening General Manager of the Dorint Paris Charles de Gaulle, slated for a November 2002 opening.

Walter Fontaneau, 32, is the new Executive Chef at the Chateau Hotel Mont Royal in Chantilly. He takes over from Roland Buge, under whom he had previously worked at the Chateau in 1995 and 1996. 

Medhi Hemici has been named Group Director of Sales and Marketing for Lucien Barrière Hotels in France. He joins from Raffles-Swissôtel, where he was Regional Director of Sales and Marketing for Europe. 

Laurent Brun is the new Executive Chef at the elegant Chateau de Belesbat. He was previously the Chef de Cuisine at the Anassa in Cyprus.

Cornelius Everke, previously Director of Operations at Autostadt Wolfsburg, and the Director of Food and Beverage for the Warner Brothers Theme Park in Germany, is now in charge of operations for Starbucks Coffee in Germany. He also was Assistant Food and Beverage Manager at the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong.

Sebastian Heinemann has moved from General Manager of the Schloss Reinhardshausen to General Manager of the Atlantic Hotel Hamburg.

Myriam Kournaf, a former employee of the Boutique Search Firm, was promoted from Director of Sales and Marketing to Director of Operations at Le Méridien Garden Beach Juan Les Pins, on the French Riviera.

Andreas Oberoi has been named Manager of the soon to open (June 2002) Arabella-Sheraton Mardavall Hotel & Spa in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. He previously had worked as Marketing Director of the Kempinski Hotel Vierjahreszeiten in Munich. 

At the Ritz-Carlton Istanbul, Rainer Burkle has replaced Michel Blanchi as General Manager.

Wolfgang Nitschke is the General Manager of Berlin's Regent Schlosshotel.  Up until last summer he was the General Manager of the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, following a stint as General Manager of the Westin Grand Berlin.

Yvette Thuering is the new General Manager of  Raffles Brown's Hotel London, replacing Peter Richards who left the company, Ms. Thuering was the past immediate General Manager of Swissôtel Amsterdam.
