San Diego Paradise Point Resort Raises $239,096 for The Make-A-Wish Foundation

San Diego, CA July 7, 1999 - The 12th Annual San Diego Paradise Point Resort Make-A-Wish Golf Tournament, held on June 28, 1999, raised a phenomenal $239,096, which will go directly to granting the wishes of local children with life-threatening illnesses.  Due to the incredible success of this years event, the tournament has now exceeded $1 million in total donations.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego will be granting its 1,000th wish this year, noted Ilene Hubbs, Executive Director of the San Diego Make-A-Wish Foundation. And, San Diego Paradise Point Resort will have accounted for 25% of the 1,000 wishes granted due to their tremendous support and efforts in raising over $1 million over the past twelve years.

It is extremely satisfying to see our efforts directly benefit these special children in San Diego. It is our ongoing mission that no child suffering from a life-threatening illness in San Diego will go without receiving their wish, states Steve Gaspari, Tournament Director and General Manager of San Diego Paradise Point Resort.

San Diego Paradise Point Resort, formerly the San Diego Princess Resort, held its annual event at the Bernardo Heights Country Club in Rancho Bernardo and the Mt. Woodson
Country Club in Ramona. Major sponsors in this years tournament were Barney & Barney and California Bank and Trust.  316 players from across the country came to participate in this years monumental tournament to help exceed the $1 million mark in total donations for the San Diego Make-A-Wish Foundation.  The tournament was an all day affair, beginning with a morning breakfast reception at Paradise Point complete with putting golf games, raffle ticket sales and a silent auction.  Proceeding the afternoon golf tournament, more than 500 guests enjoyed a gourmet dinner reception in the main ballroom at Paradise Point Resort.  Master of Ceremonies, Hank Bauer, local KFMB-TV sports media personality, added a wonderful touch to this years reception by helping with the live auction bidding and announcing the winners of this  years tournament. The live auction item was a big hit with the bidders this year, offering a week long cruise aboard a private yacht in the Caribbean for eight people complete with their own Captain, Gourmet Chef and Engineer/Deck Hand. This years silent auction also proved very successful featuring glamorous getaways; golf packages at private clubs such as the Bel Air Country Club and Cypress Point on the Monterey Peninsula and a plethora of sports memorabilia from the Padres, Chargers, Cardinals and Colts.

The tournament has grown from a fledgling local charity event to the most prolific fundraising activity for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego.  All aspects of the tournament, which has become a labor of love for all resort employees, are completely staffed and serviced by volunteer employees of Paradise Point Resort.   The primary goal of the Make-A-Wish Golf Tournament is to generate funds that will go directly to brightening the lives of children with life-threatening illnesses in the San Diego area.  Local San Diegans and participants from across the country have the opportunity to experience the heartwarming joy of a community joined together and enabling special childrens dreams to come true, in addition to having a very rewarding and enjoyable day.

The tournament has gained both local and national attention for its success in producing a premier fundraising event.  Recently, the tournament was awarded a 1999 California Tourism Award for Best Community Service Program.

Celebrating 37 years of excellence, , which is currently undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation, is the two-time recipient of the Finest Service Award presented by the Convention and Visitors Bureau.  Paradise Point Resort is located on a  44-acre tropical island in the heart of San Diego, just across the street from SeaWorld Adventure Park at 1404 West Vacation Road, San Diego, CA  92109.
