Great Eagle Holdings US$28 Million Renovation Transforms the Former Hong Kong Renaissance Hotel into a 5 Star Independent Property Renamed The Great Eagle Hotel;
Names Olivier Gibaud as Resident Manager

Hong Kong - June 1999 - Located in the heart of the vibrant commercial and tourist centre of Tsimshatsui in Kowloon, the new Great Eagle Hotel is Hong Kongs first independent five star hotel. Hong Kong developer Great Eagle Holdings took over the former Hong Kong Renaissance Hotel to create a hotel which, as its name suggests, will soar to new heights of hospitality. At a cost of US$28 million, it has been transformed to a unique high quality property which will appeal to the discerning business or leisure traveller.

Unlike any other hotel in Hong Kong, the Great Eagle Hotel offers an elegant European style and opulence with a contemporary twist. Superbly located right in the midst of Hong Kongs busiest commercial district, the hotel serves as a discreet and relaxing sanctuary from the excitement and activity outside.

The Great Eagle Hotel has announced the appointment of Olivier Gibaud as Resident Manager.  Mr.  Gibaud joins the Great Eagle from The Regent Bangkok where he spent more than three years first as Director of Food & Beverage and then Executive Assistant Manager. Prior to this, he was Executive Assistant Manager at The Phuket Yacht Club under Mandarin Oriental, and Food & Beverage Manager at The Mandarin Oriental Jakarta and The White Swan Hotel in China.

Said General Manager Nigel Roberts: We are delighted to have Olivier join our team. He has precisely the kind of prestigious international hotel background which will assist us in our mission to position The Great Eagle Hotel as the finest independent hotel in Hong Kong.

The Great Eagle Hotel is an independently managed hotel which is wholly owned by Great Eagle Holdings Limited. The company also owns a number of prestigious international hotels including The Langham Hilton in London, Sheraton Towers Southgate in Melbourne, Le Meridien Boston, Delta Chelsea Hotel in Toronto and the Sheraton Auckland Hotel and Towers. In Hong Kong, the company also owns The Eaton Hotel, Eaton House Furnished Apartments and Yat Tung Heen Chinese Restaurants. The Great Eagle Hotel has also just signed a contract to become a member of Summit Hotels & Resorts, a leading worldwide reservations and marketing network.

About the Great Eagle Hotel
It might sound odd to describe anywhere so centrally located as a hideaway, yet that is precisely the atmosphere the Great Eagle Hotel exudes. The hotel has 487 spacious rooms and suites, but the decor, the tranquility and the high standards of personalised service are reminiscent of a quiet European boutique hotel, quite unlike the impersonal style of most large chain hotels in Asia.

Visitors will be impressed by the visual impact of the hotel the moment they enter. A grand marble staircase with an intricate gilt railing adds drama to the spacious hotel lobby, as do the barrel vault ceiling and custom made rock-crystal chandeliers. Imported marble and onyx columns define the different areas of the lobby and international artworks and sculptures enhance its European style. Above the reception area is a stunning modern glass sculpture called sea forms by the award-winning American visual artist Dale Chihuly.

The adjacent Lobby Lounge provides a cosy yet contemporary ambience for guests to sit and take in the stylish, relaxing atmosphere. A fully equipped state-of-the-art business centre is located on the ground floor next to the hotel reception and its extensive facilities are complemented by crafted marble, wood inlays and leather sofas.

The Great Eagle Hotel offers a superb Ballroom as well as Botticelli, Bernini, Raphael and Michaelangelo function rooms, which as their names suggest recreate a setting of understated elegance. Subtly finished timber panels and soft silk walls contrast with rich custom-patterned carpets in black, gold and burgundy. The Ballroom is flexibly designed so that it can be divided into smaller areas for any scale of meeting, seminar, exhibition or dinner.

The hotels 462 spacious rooms and 25 suites are comfortably and stylishly furnished to reflect the theme of the public areas and are well equipped with the latest amenities including a state-of the-art safety and security system, electronic bedside console to control all room features including air-conditioning, lights, clock and TV screening of messages, marble bathrooms with separate shower and deep bathtub and three telephones including two with hands-free speaker facility.

The hotels Club Floor Rooms also feature gold bathroom fixtures, towel bathrobes and electrically-controlled curtains and a private in-room fax machine. Suites also have jacuzzis and televisions in both the lounge and the bedroom area. Club floor and suite guests also have access to the Club Lounge which provides a complimentary continental breakfast and evening cocktails. They are also entitled to unlimited garment pressing, local phone calls and airport pick-up by private limousine.

On top of the hotel is a unique rooftop swimming pool and a state-of-the-art boutique fitness centre, both offering stunning views of Kowloon.

The Great Eagle has retained and enhanced two restaurants from the former Hong Kong Renaissance Hotel which have enjoyed a longstanding reputation for excellence. The Bostonian continues its 11-year tradition of fine dining with an American accent. The restaurant offers some of the finest steaks and seafood in Hong Kong in a smart casual wood-panelled ambience.

Tang Court, meanwhile, now serves an even wider selection of authentic Chinese culinary delicacies. The décor reflects the splendours of the Tang Dynasty, often characterised as the Golden Age in Chinese history. Graceful silks with a gold accent and contemporary sculptures adorn the walls while a dramatic spiral staircase leads up to five private dining rooms named after famous Tang Dynasty poets Tai Bai, Le Tian, Zi Shou, Bai Yu and Zi Mei.
