Debbie C. Howarth First Graduate of Distance-Learning
Master's Degree Program Offered by HSMAI and
University of Nevada, Las Vegas;
Master of Hospitality Administration with Concentration in Hospitality Marketing
MCLEAN, VA (April 30, 2003) Reinforcing its position as the leader in providing information and educational opportunities, HSMAI is pleased to announce the first graduate of its distance-learning Masters Degree program Debbie C. Howarth, CHME.  The two-year program, held in conjunction with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, provides a Master of Hospitality Administration (MHA) with a concentration in Hospitality Marketing upon completion.

On-going education is one of the greatest gifts a professional can give themselves, states Robert A. Gilbert, CHME, CHA, president and CEO of HSMAI.  By offering a means for those in hospitality marketing to reach a higher level of learning, while staying employed in their present position through distance education, is just another way that HSMAI serves as a great source of information and education to its members and the industry at-large.

This two-year program of study, which partners with the universitys William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration, is delivered in an executive format, allowing participants to continue their current employment.  It utilizes Internet coursework to reduce time away from home and allow participants to continue studies while traveling on the road.

The highly-interactive program is designed to provide marketing managers with the tools and problem-solving ability needed in todays marketing environment.  Among the subjects of study are marketing, branding strategies, human resources management, information technology, financial analysis and strategic management.

Each course starts with a face-to-face meeting with students, and then the Internet takes over for interacting with the professor and completing the remainder of the course.  The Internet is used as the source of reading materials, enabling students to have the equivalent of a university research library available electronically.

Howarth has held various positions, including regional director of sales and marketing, director of sales and general manager, and currently is an adjunct professor at Massachusetts Bay Community College.  She has earned a Certified Hospitality Marketing Executive (CHME) designation from HSMAI and participated in Choice Hotels Internationals Management Training Program.

HSMAI offers a partial scholarship to help offset tuition costs for any HSMAI member who enrolls in the program.

HSMAI is an organization of sales and marketing professionals representing all segments of the hospitality and travel industry.
