The Hilton Sydney, Hilton Internationals Australian Flagship
Hotel Receiving A$400 million Makeover
Sydney, Friday 30th August, 2002 - The Hilton Sydney, Hilton Internationals Australian flagship hotel, is to receive a major investment which will put the hotel in the premier position in Asia Pacific when it re-opens in early 2004.

The A$400 million investment represents the combined cost of acquiring and redeveloping the entire Hilton Sydney and Capital Centre complex, which will ultimately consist of a 577 bedroom hotel and convention centre, 15,000 square metres of A-grade commercial office space, a 2,500 square metre LivingWell Health Club, and a three storey basement car park.

The landmark city hotel will close on November 29th and Leighton Contractors will move onto the site. The project is expected to create over 1,000 jobs for local subcontractors and suppliers.

The 18 month project will involve a basement-to-rooftop remodelling including the introduction of a new world class convention and conference centre with facilities to accommodate up to 3,000 delegates and feature a ballroom that will seat 1,200.  The hotel will also feature 'Hilton Meetings', Hilton's total meeting service for small and medium sized meetings, offering 23 state-of-the-art meeting rooms with removable walls to allow for plenary sessions and breakouts.

The hotel makeover will include gutting, restyling and completely refitting the hotels 577 guestrooms.  However, the much loved, heritage listed Marble Bar will remain intact.  In addition, the new-look hotel will include a LivingWell Premier Health Club.  This club will be a key pioneer component in LivingWell's planned strategic roll out across Australia.

Opened in 1975, the Hilton Sydney was Australia's first internationally branded hotel.  Commenting on the project, Hilton International's Chief Executive, Anthony Harris said:  "Keeping the Hilton name at the forefront of the hospitality sector is our key objective.  The brand represents quality accommodation and quality service.  The revamped Hilton Sydney will offer the best of both and provide a welcome boost to the conference and convention business in the region."

Sydneys Lord Mayor, Frank Sartor, said:  "The Hilton is a key part of the city's history and heritage and I welcome its redevelopment.  A rebuilt and reinvigorated Hilton will be a significant contribution to Sydney maintaining its position as a key destination, especially for conventions."

The re-modelling and re-positioning of Hilton Sydney is part of Hilton Internationals programme to upgrade its property portfolio in the Asia Pacific region. A refreshed and revitalised Hilton Sydney will help keep a marketing edge for Sydney in the highly competitive convention business.
