Jonathan M. Tisch, Chairman & CEO of Loews Hotels,
Chosen the 2002 Inductee to the Travel Industry
Hall of Leaders
WASHINGTON, DC August 16, 2002 - Jonathan M. Tisch, chairman & CEO of Loews Hotels, has been chosen as the 2002 inductee to the Travel Industry Hall of Leaders.  Tisch was selected by a committee of senior travel industry executives appointed by the Travel Industry Association of America (TIA).

Individuals eligible for induction are those persons whose efforts have made sustained and distinguished contributions that have had a positive impact on the overall travel and tourism industry.

"Jon's tireless efforts to raise the visibility of the travel and tourism industry have made him one of the industry's leading national spokespersons," remarked William S. Norman, president and CEO of the Travel Industry Association of America.  "The choice of Jon as this year's Hall of Leaders inductee is a testimonial to, and recognition of, the entrepreneurial spirit that drives the U.S. travel and tourism industry.   He has developed and nurtured successful enterprises that generated wealth for our nation and created jobs for thousands of people."

A profile of the 2002 Travel Industry Hall of Leaders inductee follows.

Tisch took the reins of president of Loews Hotels in 1986 and since that time has doubled number of rooms and amount of revenue.  A long-time resident of New York City and a veteran of the travel industry, Tisch's dedication to his hometown and the travel and tourism industry was underscored through his recent election as chairman of the Board of Directors of NYC & Company.  Prior to his election, Tisch previously served as a member of the board for many years.

Since 1995, Tisch has also served as chairman of the Travel Business Roundtable, a prominent coalition of chief executives representing various sectors of the travel and tourism industry. Concurrent with his national efforts to help stimulate travel and tourism in the aftermath of September 11th, Tisch was asked to serve as chairman of New York Rising, a task force set up by NYC & Company to help rebuild the city by reviving the local travel and tourism industry. To further that effort, Tisch also serves on the Tourism Advisory Council of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, the entity established to rebuild Lower Manhattan.

As further evidence of Tisch's dedication to community, both local and the tourism community, he created the Good Neighbor Policy ten years ago, which Tisch calls the first and most comprehensive community outreach program in the industry.  Under this policy, all 16 Loews properties are required to donate excess food and other goods to local shelters and hunger centers, support local literacy programs, encourage volunteer activities among employees, implement energy-saving efforts, and employ an extensive recycling program.

Tisch practices in private life what he preaches in his business life - involvement in community.  Tisch was (and, in some cases, still is) actively involved with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Welfare to Work Partnership, the VH1 Save the Music Foundation, the President's Export Council, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation, and the Robert Steel Foundation for Pediatric Cancer Research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In addition to this, Tisch found time to serve the industry in a variety of ways, including his 1997 chairmanship of the American Hotel & Lodging Association.

Previous inductees into the prestigious Travel Industry Hall of Leaders have included such industry notables as Walt Disney, Bill Marriott, Curtis Nelson and The Honorable Ronald Brown.

Tisch will be inducted into the Travel Industry Hall of Leaders group at the Annual Awards Banquet on October 10, during TIA's Marketing Outlook Forum taking place October 9 - 12 at the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa in Hollywood, Florida.

TIA is the national, non-profit organization representing all components of the $545 billion travel industry.  TIA's mission is to represent the whole of the U.S. travel industry to promote and facilitate increased travel to and within the United States.
