 Puerto Rico Tourism Company Updates 
Hotel Projects On the Island

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, Nov. 5, 2001 - The Puerto Rico Tourism Company today issued an update on hotel projects taking place on the Island.

Highlights of the hotel projects under construction include:  Paradisus Sol Melia (980 rooms), Horned Dorset Primavera (22 additional villas), and Las Casitas at Wyndham El Conquistador (70 luxury villas).

Overview of Hotel Groundbreakings

The Hampton Inn in Caguas will feature 125 rooms in addition to meeting and banquet facilities.  The hotel is expected to open in March 2002.  Paradisus Sol Melia will be the Island�s first all-inclusive resort in Rio Grande.  Guests can stay at two hotels (each containing 490 rooms and a golf course) when the resort opens its doors to the public in December 2002.

The Costa Bonita Hotel Villas in Culebra will offer guests who stay at this 92 room property unlimited opportunities for windsurfing, scuba diving, kayaking and sailing.  The hotel is scheduled to open its doors in April 2002.

Overview of Hotel Renovations and Expansions

Located in Isla Verde, the Water Club (formerly known as Colony San Juan) recently renovated the 10-story, 84-room hotel to include more facilities for business travelers.  The boutique hotel�s ground floor-restaurant changed its name from Basilicos to Shore Club.

The Horned Dorset Primavera Hotel in Rincon is constructing 22 luxury villa suites.  Each of the spacious 1,400-square foot Caribbean-style villas will feature expansive master bedrooms, living rooms, dining areas, bath, wet bar and seaview terraces.  The one-bedroom villas will open in 2002.
Las Casitas at Wyndham El Conquistador Hotel and Casino is currently adding 70 one-, two- and three-bedroom luxury villas to the resort.  The fully furnished villas will feature extra large living rooms, kitchen area and two swimming pools.  Plans also include a second 18-hole golf course, clubhouse and expanded facilities.

Puerto Rico Convention Center

The 580,000 square feet Puerto Rico Convention Center will begin groundbreaking in December 2001.  It is expected to be completed in October 2004 and will feature:

  • 159,000 square feet of exhibit space
  • 40,000 square feet ballroom
  • 40,000 square feet space for meeting rooms
  • 102,000 square feet for public circulation
The Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC), created in 1970, is a public corporation responsible for stimulating, promoting and regulating the development of the tourism industry.  It markets Puerto Rico as a tourism destination through advertising, public relations and promotional activities; promotes tourism among local residents; provides visitor orientation and technical assistance to investors; evaluates tourism facilities and establishes standards of quality; and regulates and oversees gaming operations.  PRTC has offices and representatives in the U.S. mainland, Canada, Europe and Latin America.
