BLOOMINGTON, Minn - May 19, 2001-- Two minutes and two seconds. That's
all it took for Rebecca Tobar, a housekeeper at the Spearfish, South Dakota
Super 8(R) motel, to make a bed and claim the title of Fastest Bed-maker
in North America.
Competing in the Super 8 Motels International Bed-making Championship held today at the Mall of America here, Tobar beat 39 of the fastest and finest bed-makers from across the United States and Canada to claim the title and the grand prize of $25,000 cash. Michelle Hanko of the Mifflinville, Pennsylvania Super 8 motel finished second with a time of two minutes and ten seconds, and won $8,888. Sheila Good Shield of the Hot Springs, South Dakota Super 8 motel placed third, with a time of two minutes and twenty-four seconds, and took home a prize of $4,444. Contestants in this unique challenge are judged not only on speed, but
accuracy as well. Contestants fitted a queen-size bed with two sheets,
two pillows, two pillowcases, a blanket and a comforter. Each wrinkled
sheet, crooked bedspread or improper "Super 8 tuck" added five seconds
to a contestant's time. More than three penalties resulted in disqualification.
The Super 8 International Bed-making Championship is held every two years to honor the hard work and dedication of Super 8 housekeepers. All 40 of today's competitors were awarded roundtrip airfare to the championship and accommodations. Beds used in the regional and international championships were donated to charity. Founded in America's heartland in 1974, Super 8 Motels has more than 1,980 motels and 120,700 rooms throughout the United States and Canada.
