Winner of the Box, a Hospitality Design event, to be brought to life at HD Expo

New York, NY (April 11, 2018) – Hospitality Design Group has partnered with Hilton on the Box, a one-of-a-kind design competition that in January, challenged 12 top design firms to create the ultimate luxury guestroom in 24 hours. The winning concept, from Toronto-based Chapi Chapo Design in collaboration with the two dozen sponsoring manufacturers, will make its debut on the show floor at booth #1883 during HD Expo, May 2-4 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.

“When Hilton came to us with the idea, I jumped on the chance. It was amazing opportunity to watch 12 leading design firms sketch, draw, and render a design scheme, work with the sponsors to find the right products to make their vision a reality, and then present the concepts live, all in a day and a half at the Biltmore in Phoenix,” says Stacy Shoemaker Rauen, editor in chief of Hospitality Design magazine, and vice president of the Hospitality Design Group. “I can’t wait to see the final concept come to life, which blurs the boundaries of living, working, and sleeping in a modern, elegant environment.”

With the mandated design brief of taking inspiration from the 1920s, a nod to Hilton’s 100-year anniversary, Chapi Chapo Design’s co-CEO, Alienor Guilhem, says, “We took the great influences and elements from 1920s—where style and innovation were intertwined, and luxurious social events and artistic, tactile expressions of design were intertwined, and the geometry, bold colors, and textures influenced by this idea of expansion and compression of spaces—and [asked] ‘How would that redefine the 21st Century?'”

At booth #1883, attendees will have the chance to not only see the final concept firsthand—which is being built out on the show floor with the help of innovative construction company Admares and procurement firm the Parker Company—but also watch a behind-the-scenes video of the entire process. Plus, on Wednesday, May 2 at 2 pm in the Social Hub, booth #5645, Guilhem and the judges, along with Hilton’s Leo Eskenazi, one of the masterminds of the challenge, will discuss the entire event and of course how they came to select Chapi Chapo’s idea.

Says Liz Sommerville, group show director of HD Expo: “Our judging panel brings decades of experience to the design challenge, so this discussion is a continuation and a highlight of the high-end content at the Social Hub.”

The industry-selected panel judges were as follows:

  • Bobby Berk, founder, Bobby Berk Home and Bobby Berk Interiors + Design, and costar of Queer Eye
  • Anthony Melchiorri, president, Argeo Hospitality
  • Maurice Perry, director, perrysketch, LLC
  • Larry Traxler, senior vice president, global design, Hilton
