Sept. 12–OXFORD — A developer will ask for approval to build a 94-room hotel on South Lamar Boulevard, between the current Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi and the replacement for which site preparation is in progress nearby.

Andy Callicutt, represented by engineer Jeff Williams, has submitted paperwork to the Oxford Planning Commission for the Franklin Market Hotel.

Under its current Neighborhood Business zoning, the site would require a special exception for hotels. The Planning Commission on Monday approved a new zoning category — Medical District — that is likely to apply to the site if the Board of Aldermen gives its expected approval, but it will not apply until at least mid-October.

Both the special exception and the site plan were on the agenda for Monday’s Planning Commission meeting, but it was rescheduled for a special meeting on Sept. 29.

“They were trying to work out some confusion,” Williams said, noting there was a difference of opinion as to whether or not the rustic road on one side is an easement or a city street.

Jere Allen, whose art studio is served by the road, declined comment.

Although the hotel’s name may reflect the name of the family store that has occupied the space for several decades, the application indicates it will be part of the “Home2 Suites by Hilton” brand.

Williams said it is too early in the process for a projected completion date, but he said his client wants to start as soon as possible.

“I don’t really have a date for the opening. Obviously, their main clients would be people going to the hospital,” Williams said. “I think they’re ready to go immediately.”
