JMBM Launches Cornell Scholarship
By Jeffer, Mangels, Butler & Marmaro LLP, August, 1998
Featuring the largest hotel finance panel in the United States, with more than 40 of the top debt and equity financing sources, JMBM’S 8th Annual Hotel Conference brought raves from more than 400 hotel industry executives.  The action-packed one-day conference was moderated by Jim Butler and Peter Benudiz of the Firm’s Global Hospitality Group.

Competition for Finance Sources.

With panels represented by the top banks, life companies, pension funds and advisors, credit companies, and Wall Street Firms, the panelists told tales of more abundant and competitive — though cautious —  financing.

CEO Panel Highlight.

Laurence Geller, president of Strategic Hotel Capital got the sparks flying on the CEO lunch panel with Doug Geoga, president of Hyatt Hotels Co., Tom Lattin, president of Patriot American Hospitality  and Paul Whetsell, president of CapStar Hotel Co. in a friendly, but spirited, comparison of operating styles and strategies.

Financing Sourcebook Available.

The boom in hotel lending and the lending criteria of its players is documented in the 400+ page Conference Materials and in a separate Directory of Hospitality Finance, available while supplies last for $35. JMBM Launches Cornell Scholarship

At JMBM’s 8th Annual Hotel Conference, held on May 7, the Firm announced the creation of a $50,000 scholarship endowment fund at the Cornell School of Hotel Administration — the JMBM Hospitality Scholarship Fund. Each payment on the Firm’s pledge will be used to honor a leader in the hospitality industry and each year the scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding Cornell hospitality student.

In his announcement, Global Hospitality Group Chairman Jim Butler remarked, “JMBM has been extraordinarily fortunate to become a leader in an industry that is dynamic, exciting, and changes with every single room-night. The JMBM Scholarship is our way to thank the industry, honor its leaders and make a meaningful contribution to the long-term advancement of hospitality.”

In the coming months, JMBM and Cornell will announce a scholarship selection process to encourage the best student applicants.

Jim Eyster is First Honoree.

The JMBM Hospitality Industry Leadership Award honoree for 1998 is James J. Eyster, Professor of Hotel Finance and Real Estate at Cornell University. Butler commented that Eyster is “a natural for our first award. He’s an outstanding hospitality luminary in educating the industry’s future leaders, bringing the rigors of academia to business research, consulting to clients with wisdom, and holding us all to the highest standards of ethical conduct and social responsibility.”
