Outrigger Mooloolaba International Beach Resort, Developed by  Forrester Kurts Properties and Bloomberg Incorporation Limited,
Opens on Australias Sunshine Coast
HONOLULU, OAHU, HAWAII - July 17, 2000 - Outrigger Hotels & Resorts has added another property to its Australian management portfolio with the opening of the A$84 million Outrigger Mooloolaba International Beach Resort, located in the burgeoning southern region of Australias Sunshine Coast.

Representatives from Forrester Kurts Properties and Bloomberg Incorporation Limited, developers of the project, officially turned over the keys to the property to Outrigger Hotels & Resorts at opening ceremonies held July 11, 2000. Representing the developers at the ceremonies was Rod Forrester, managing director of Forrester Kurts Properties. Attending on behalf of Outrigger Hotels & Resorts was Bill Henderson, vice president of business development, who flew in from Hawaii for the opening, Dave Lawrence, vice president and general director for Australia, and Dennis Mackenzie, hotel general manager.

Maroochy Shire Mayor, Alison Kerr-Jones, cut the ribbon officially opening the Sunshine Coasts newest resort hotel. Commenting on the opening of the resort, Mayor Kerr-Jones stated that the new Outrigger will usher in a new era for tourism for Mooloolaba and for the Sunshine Coast. Tourism Sunshine Coast Manager John Liddicoat said that it will rejuvenate Mooloolaba, and will allow us to tap into new markets, including corporate, conference and meeting markets, along with our traditional leisure markets.

The new seventeen-story luxury resort is located on prime ocean front land in the heart of Mooloolabas thriving cafe and retail district. The hotel has 204 one-, two and three-bedroom luxurious apartments, each offering spectacular views of the surrounding Sunshine Coast region and coastline.  In-room amenities include a spa bath, full kitchen, washer and dryer, private balconies, and modern decor and furnishings designed in contemporary seaside themes and hues.

Recreational facilities include a large fully landscaped deck with the adjoining award-winning Earth Bistro restaurant, an observation platform and two pools. Other amenities include a spa, sauna, health club, gymnasium, barbecue area and 25 specialty retail and restaurant tenants on the ground level. The property also offers a dedicated Kids Club during weekends and school holidays.

On-site conference facilities, with meeting space for up to 220 delegates, is also available at the Outrigger Mooloolaba, and according to Outriggers Dave Lawrence, the property has already drawn interest from the corporate sector. Before we even opened we had secured 40 conference bookings, which I believe is attributable to the propertys mix of accommodation and resort-style recreation facilities.

Outrigger Hotels & Resorts opened its Australia offices on the Gold Coast in 1998 to support its Australian expansion activities. The Outrigger Mooloolaba represents the companys fourth property in Australia and joins Outriggers other deluxe beachfront properties located in Cairns, Surfers Paradise and Coolangatta.

According to Bill Henderson, Outrigger will continue to explore opportunities in Australia. Outriggers track record for maintaining solid hotel occupancies throughout the Pacific region puts the company in a good position to utilize its strong marketing network to support more properties in Australia, he said. We look forward to exploring other opportunities in Australia, New Zealand and the region as they become available.

On The Road to Recovery in Fiji

July 15, 2000 - Amid hugs, tears of relief and a deeply moving traditional ceremony of forgiveness, the remaining hostages were released from their 56 days in captivity. George Speight and Mahendra Chaudry, (captor and captive), along with many of the hostages and supporters of George Speight shared kava during the traditional forgiveness ceremony and hugged each other. The 50-member Great Council of Chiefs, the traditional power of Fiji, appointed Ratu Josefa Iloilo as President and Ratu Jope Seniloli as Vice President.

Weapons are expected to be returned to the military today in a collection system carefully orchestrated by Lt. Col. Filipio Tarakinikini. After the weapons have been returned, some members of George Speights group will be able to return to their former positions within the army. While there are no trade sanctions in place, the United States and other nations have not removed the threat of sanctions until democracy is restored.

Airlines continue to operate on schedule in and out of Nadi International Airport, consolidating their services to reflect demand. Hotels and resorts are all operating normally, although at a considerably lower occupancy.

Rebuilding confidence in the business community will take considerable rehabilitation.  The stability of the government; containment of the downward spiral of the countrys finances; the reversal of the massive unemployment; and the return to normalcy of the biggest foreign exchange earner, tourism, hopefully will be high on the list of priorities of the new government.

The Tourism Action Group (TAG), which has been meeting throughout the hostage crisis, has been developing recovery plans in cooperation with the industry. TAG has been meeting with wholesalers to discuss the recovery plan, New Zealand and Australian wholesalers this week and North American and Japanese wholesalers recently, who have promised full support once the hostage crisis ended. Members of the industry, overseas wholesalers, airlines that service Fiji and the countrys tourism industry all agree that the lead time to bring tourism back to pre-crisis numbers will be shorter than first believed.

Now is the time for the healing to begin in this exquisite island paradise known as Fiji and to assist in the rising of the phoenix from the ashes.
