Mohegan Sun Setting Meetings Industry Precedent
By Requiring MPI and CIC Certification of Key Personnel
UNCASVILLE, CT - July 10, 2000 - Mohegan Sun, the Northeast's premier meetings, entertainment and gaming destination, announced today the unprecedented step of requiring all its conference services staff and senior management to have their Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) or Certified Meeting Manager (CMM) designations.

To further ensure that its conference services-related personnel are among the industry's most highly qualified, Mohegan Sun will underwrite the application and examination fees associated with pursuing a CMP credential, which is awarded by the Convention Industry Council (CIC), or the CMM designation granted by Meeting Professionals International (MPI). Qualified managers, directors and above will be required to have, or within a year of employment, attain their appropriate designation.

The new policy is being implemented as Mohegan Sun moves full steam ahead with its $800 million expansion, which features a 34-story, 1,200-room luxury hotel tower that will offer more than 100,000 square feet of high-tech, ultraflexible meeting and function space, including the Northeast's largest ballroom. The entire project is due for completion in spring 2002.

"The standard we are setting for our conference services team is the most stringent yet by a meetings destination," said David Casey, vice president of sales and marketing for Mohegan Sun. "Thanks to the leadership of the CIC and MPI, the CMP and CMM designations today are synonymous with excellence in the meetings industry. That's why Mohegan Sun is committed to working in close partnership with two such important industry organizations so planners can rest assured that our standards will be the highest."

Both the CIC and MPI were quick. to praise Mohegan Sun's latest policy initiative.

"The CIC welcomes Mohegan Sun's very public commitment to setting the highest possible standards for its conference services," said Garis Distelhorst, CAE, president and CEO of the CIC. "We encourage every meetings destination to follow the example set by Mohegan Sun. When conference services managers and directors are certified by the industry, everyone benefits - attendees enjoy a higher level of satisfaction while the meeting destination stands to win repeat business."

Added Edwin L. Griffin Jr., CAE, MPI president and CEO, "Requiring verification of skill levels commensurate with the responsibilities of their position is a laudable and commendable statement. It should be a benchmark for others to measure their commitment to employee preparation and professionalism. We applaud Mohegan Sun for its demonstrated vision."

The CMP program was launched in 1985 by the CIC to enhance the knowledge and performance of meeting professionals. Certification is based on professional experience and a rigorous academic examination. Nearly 6,000 certificants have passed the CMP exam. Beyond insuring the highest possible industry standards, practices and ethics, the program seeks to maximize the value of products and services provided by CMPs.
