WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Aug. 18, 2000 - Starwood
Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: HOT) announced that it has
signed a management agreement with Agenco Engenharia e Construcoes Ltd.
and Bank Opportunity to manage a new 308-room hotel in Barra da Tijuca,
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as the Sheraton Twin Towers Hotel & Suites.
Construction on the $41 million project begins this month with an opening date scheduled for first quarter, 2003. Rio de Janeiro-based STA Arquitectura, is the architect. Barra da Tijuca is Rio de Janeiro�s fastest growing area, with a combination of a new residential and shopping area, restaurants and attractions, including the recently inaugurated Hard Rock Cafe and entertainment venues such as Rio Water Planet and Wet & Wild Theme Parks. The area has shown major growth in the corporate segment, evidenced by the many multinational companies choosing to set up headquarters there. The 14-floor hotel will be located on Sernambetiba Avenue, facing approximately 10 miles of beautiful beaches. The facilities include two restaurants, one bar, two outdoor swimming pools and a Health Club with sauna, indoor pool, steam baths and Jacuzzi. There will also be two squash courts and a playground for children. Spacious meeting facilities totaling 11,000 square feet will cater to the needs of business events and conventions, and a business center, shopping arcade and 558-vehicle parking plaza will offer convenient service and comfort.
