La Cabana All Suite Beach Resort in Aruba
Awarded Prestigious GREEN GLOBE Distinction
Award for Outstanding Environmental Performance
La Cabana's most impressive "green" accomplishments
Oranjestad, Aruba (March 27, 2000) - The "greening" process continues... La Cabana All Suite Beach Resort in Aruba won the prestigious worldwide GREEN GLOBE Distinction Award for Outstanding Environmental Performance in the annual Achievement Awards for 2000. La Cabana was one of four companies worldwide to receive this honor in 2000 - and the only resort in the Caribbean to be recognized in this illustrious winning group. Winners were assessed on their environmental performance against each of the 13 Agenda 21 areas that have been defined for the tourism industry by the World Travel & Tourism Council, the World Tourism Organization and the Earth Council. This award, which is bestowed upon new members, was given in recognition of La Cabana's environmental activities since joining GREEN GLOBE last year.

"It is a great honor for us to win such an impressive worldwide distinction as the GREEN GLOBE Achievement Award," said David Page, general manager of La Cabana.

"One of our long-term goals is to position La Cabana as a benchmark for environmental consciousness throughout the Caribbean, and winning the GREEN GLOBE Achievement Award is just the kind of motivation that encourages us to persevere. Eventually, we would like to serve
as an example to the world's public and private sectors of how ingraining the goals of conserving the environment and community involvement into our business plans, department initiatives and employee value system can make a significant difference," Page added.

Award entries were judged on specific actions taken within the past year in the following areas: waste minimization; energy efficiency; management of fresh water and water waste; hazardous substance; land-use planning; actions involving staff customers and the community in environmental issues, etc.

According to GREEN GLOBE, La Cabana's actions were deemed outstanding for a large hotel. GREEN GLOBE applauded La Cabana's documentation of its many "green" achievements and cost-saving efforts because they serve as an excellent example for other resorts on Aruba and in the Caribbean. As a result of La Cabana's "green" activities, the resort saved more than $145,000 in 1999 - primarily from energy conservation.

The award was presented at the ITB industry conference in Berlin, Germany, in March, 2000. David Page, general manager, and Anthony Wever, director of engineering, were on-hand to accept the honors.

"This award is the springboard to our next step - securing GREEN GLOBE certification," Page said.

Following is a list of La Cabana's most impressive "green" accomplishments in the past year that reflect the resort's support of sustainable tourism and the environment.

  • The implementation of the "Green Team," La Cabana's group of employees who create and execute environmental practices.
  • The use of the "Waste Sort" program to periodically weigh and measure the quantity of waste and see the results of La Cabana's environmental initiatives (through a reduction of waste).
  • Use of capacitor banks that control and regulate the efficient flow of electricity. This yielded a savings of $30,000.
  • The installation of air-conditioner thermostats/timers which saved the resort $20,000.
  • The "Sponsor-A-Mile" Program whereby staff members clean-up the mile of road (and surrounding area) between La Cabana and the Divi Hotel.
  • Compacting of almost two tons of cardboard per week.
  • The installation of 1.6 gallon toilets that yielded a savings of $40,000.
  • Reducing, reusing and recycling, subsequently decreasing the amount of waste sent to Aruba's landfill (and creating a cost savings).
  • Full implementation of bulk composting (with the resulting output being used to fertilize the resort's gardens).

La Cabana is planning to create a new room pamphlet describing the resort's "green" activities -- as well as information on how guests can participate and make a difference.

GREEN GLOBE is a worldwide environmental management program for travel and tourism companies and tourism destinations (with membership in over 100 countries). GREEN GLOBE was developed in 1994 by the World Travel & Tourism Council and has the support of over 20 international industry associations.

Winning the GREEN GLOBE Achievement Award comes on the heels of La Cabana receiving another top accolade -- the Caribbean Hotel Association/American Express "Green Area Hotel of the Year Award" for 1999. The award was presented to the Eagle Beach Area Coalition for Aruba's Sustainable Tourism (EBA-CAST), of which La Cabana is a member, for substantial "greening efforts" in Aruba. In addition to La Cabana, EBA-CAST is comprised of Costa Linda, Bucuti Beach Resort and Amsterdam Manor.

Situated along Eagle Beach, La Cabana is a complete vacation, recreation and entertainment complex in a relaxed atmosphere reflecting the ease and spirit of the Caribbean. The resort encompasses studio, one-bedroom and Grand suites; a deluxe Health & Fitness Center; three swimming pools; five tennis courts; the "Club Cabana Nana" children's program; teen activities; casual theme nights; diverse dining; world-class entertainment in the Tropicana Showroom; and thrilling action in the Royal Cabana Casino, Aruba's largest gaming house.
