SAN FRANCISCO - April 3, 2000 -- Food.com, the
Internets food and restaurant destination, announced today the appointment
of Paul L. Westra to the newly created position of vice president, business
development, restaurant trade.
Westra will report to John Laing, Food.coms executive vice president and chief operating officer. Westra joins Food.com from Credit Suisse First Boston where he was an equity research analyst for the foodservice industry. Prior to Credit Suisse First Boston, Westra was the equity research analyst for the foodservice industry at Salomon Brothers. During his tenure on Wall Street, restaurant corporations ranked Westra as the no. 1 restaurant analyst (Reuters Survey, 1997). In addition, professional investors ranked Westra as no. 1 among all Wall Street analysts in two of 10 categories: 1) useful and timely calls; and 2) accessibility and responsiveness (Institutional Investor, 1996). Westras appointment is the first milestone in Food.coms plan to launch a restaurant industry business-to-business division that will leverage the companys relationships with restaurants. His efforts will focus on building the companys business-to-business division, establishing relationships with key suppliers, and developing valuable services for Food.coms restaurant clients. Food.com recently received $80 million in funding from key strategic partners, including Clear Channel, Liberty Digital, TV Guide, McDonalds Corp., Kraft Foods and Blockbuster Inc. As part of its strategic agreement, Food.com plans to tap into the expertise of its foodservice partners as Westra develops the companys business-to-business offerings. Pauls extensive experience in the restaurant industry is invaluable to Food.com as we begin to build the business-to-business division, said Laing, executive vice president and COO. His proven success on Wall Street and the excellent reputation he has developed will enable Food.com to offer restaurants the services they need from the right suppliers at the right cost. Westra has more than seven years experience as an equity research analyst for the restaurant industry. During his tenure on Wall Street, he studied and reported on numerous aspects of the restaurant industry, making him an expert in his field. Westras accomplishments include the creation of a revolutionary mathematical tool for stock valuation analysis, known as the RIPE model. He also created a proprietary strategic-positioning matrix for the restaurant industry that separated restaurants according to consumer use. In addition, Westra is immediately familiar with the needs of the individual restaurateur because he is part owner of two restaurants in New York City: Phebes located in the East Village and Dylan Prime in Tribeca. Westra received a masters degree in business administration from Duke Universitys Fuqua School of Business, and he graduated with a bachelors degree in business administration from the University of Massachusetts. Westra is also a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). About Food.com
