Johnson & Wales “Tasting Bill” Passes the House
March 16, 2000--The Florida House of Representatives has passed legislation 81 to 26 that would allow culinary arts students under the age of 21 to taste wine, not drink, during class.

Johnson & Wales University (J&W) has a comprehensive curriculum in the College of Culinary Arts that includes dining room service, principles of beverages, and oenology (the study of wines and wine tasting).  A graduate of Johnson & Wales’ Florida Campus will now have the opportunity to receive the same education offered at other J&W’s Providence, RI. campus. This voluntary law applies to state-accredited colleges that would choose to allow students to participate in classes such as oenology.

The philosophy of Johnson & Wales has always been very conservative in regards to alcohol and otherwise has “zero tolerance” for alcohol on campus. “What we’re proposing is not going to open the floodgates to binge drinking,” said Donald G. McGregor, president of Johnson & Wales University’s Florida Campus. “On the contrary, wine-tasting serves as an educational tool that will give our students the competitive advantage as a foodservice expert. The tasting of wines is for a class, in a controlled setting as part of an academic curriculum.” Rep. Sally Heyman, D-North Miami Beach, is backing the bill on behalf of Johnson & Wales University, which will now proceed to the Senate.

Johnson & Wales University’s Florida Campus offers two- and four-year degrees in the College of Business, College of Culinary Arts, and the Hospitality College. Johnson & Wales University, founded in 1914 in Providence, Rhode Island, is the world’s foremost foodservice and hospitality educator, with nearly 14,000 students university-wide. Johnson & Wales University, “America’s Career University”®, provides education for tomorrow’s industry leaders and training for leading hospitality businesses. A practical hands-on orientation is the hallmark of the educational experience found at Johnson & Wales. Johnson & Wales University maintains a 98%(a) employment rate within 60 days of graduation.

Other Johnson & Wales University campuses are located in Providence, RI; Charleston, SC; Norfolk, VA; Denver, CO; Worcester, MA; and an extension program in the Kingdom of Sweden. Every State in the union and over 95 countries are represented across the University.
