 Educational Institute Honors Accomplishments In Hospitality Training and Education
 
ORLANDO, Fla., June 1999�Several hospitality professionals have received top awards from the Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Motel Association (EI) for their dedication to hospitality education and training.  The following honors were presented during �A Celebration of Excellence� during the AH&MA Annual Conference and Leadership Forum in Nashville in April. 

George M. Markantonis, vice president, hotel operations, Caesars Palace, is the 1999 recipient of the Arthur Landstreet Award.  Named after the Tennessee hotelier who founded the Educational Institute, the Arthur Landstreet Award is presented to an individual whose industry leadership has significantly advanced the quality of hospitality education. 

Markantonis was selected for his dedication to the continuing education and development of more than 2,000 employees at Caesar�s Palace, and for his personal commitment to the University of Nevada Las Vegas Hotel Mentor Program. 

Philip Pistilli, chairman of the Raphael Hotel Group, was awarded EI�s highest honor, CHA Emeritus, presented only to select Certified Hotel Administrators after a career of distinguished achievements.  This award is bestowed only when EI�s Certification Commission and Board of Trustees finds a candidate who has shaped the industry through his or her contributions of experience, education, and leadership. 

Pistilli, a past chairman of the American Hotel & Motel Association, is �first on the list of who�s who of the grand hoteliers today. He is a master host who is loved and respected by everybody who is anybody throughout the hotel industry,� according to EI president Anthony G. Marshall. 

EI presented four Lamp of Knowledge Awards this year.  These awards are given to individuals and companies whose dedication to hospitality education and training have risen to unexcelled levels. This year�s honorees are: 

  • Outstanding Educator: Ronald F. Cichy, Ph.D., CHA, CHE, CFBE, professor and director of The School of Hospitality Business, Michigan State University. 
  • Outstanding Educator: Raymond C. Ellis Jr., professor and director of the Loss Prevention Management Institute at the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston. 
  • Outstanding Student: Arthur Leuden, CHE, consultant coordinator for Hospitality, Education, Training & Operation Support (HETOS), Curacao, Netherlands Antilles. 
  • Outstanding Trainer: Lisa K. Racine, program management specialist, Department of the Navy, Southwest Division, Bachelor Housing. 
The Educational Institute also awarded Gold Achievement Awards to four properties that have raised their performance standards through the Performance Plus Training and Development System.  Winning properties are: 
  • NAS Navy Lodge Rota, Spain 
  • NSB Navy Lodge Kings Bay, Georgia
  • Holiday Inn Downtown, Williamsburg, Virginia 
  • F.E. Warren Air Force Base Lodging, Wyoming
