Sofitel Jinan Silver Plaza Planned as Part of 58 Storey Shandong World Trade Centre in Jinan
Other Accour Hotels Opening in Wuhan, Shanghai and Zhengzhou

30 July 1999: Accor is targeting China for major expansion of its Sofitel and Novotel brands.

Over the next year, Accor will add hotels in Zhengzhou, Jinan, Shanghai (Pudong) and Wuhan. Additionally, Accor is examining projects in Beijing, Shanghai, Zhuhai, Qingdao and resorts in Hainan, the island province in Southern China.

One of the latest management contracts signed is for a Sofitel hotel in Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province in China . The Sofitel Jinan Silver Plaza will be part of the 58 storey Shandong World Trade Centre complex, which will also comprise commercial offices, exhibition facilities, retail outlets, restaurants and entertainment. The complex is owned by the Shandong Commerce Group Corporation.

The Sofitel will comprise 400 rooms, with an executive floor, extensive meeting and banqueting facilities, restaurants, swimming pool and health club.

The signing of the Jinan hotel is part of an expansion drive in China, with the main target areas being strategic commercial centres throughout the country. Accor plans to open four new hotels in the next twelve months and has plans to double its existing network of hotels in China over the next five years.

The opening of the Sofitel Jinan Silver Plaza will follow the opening of Sofitel Zhengzhou, a 241 room hotel in the capital city of Henan.

Pre-opening preparations are underway for Novotels in Shanghais Pudong district and in the rapidly developing city of Wuhan in Hubei Province.

Novotel Pudong Shanghai is set to be a flagship for the Novotel brand in China. The 310 room hotel is being developed by COSCO (China Ocean Shipping Company Limited) as part of a 50 storey mixed-use building. The hotel will feature a revolving restaurant and two other floors of restaurants and bars, as well as extensive meeting and banquet facilities.

Novotel Pudong will be the areas first purpose-built 4-star hotel with 5-star standards. It will service Shanghais rapidly growing financial sector and will cater for increased numbers of visitors expected as a result of the opening of the Pudong airport later in the year. The Novotel is scheduled to open in April 2000.

Another Novotel is scheduled for completion at the end of the year in Wuhan, Hubei Province. Located on the Yangtze River, Wuhan has attracted considerable French and other European investment in recent years, with many foreign engineering companies based in the city.

Novotel Wuhan is situated in a prime business location in the new financial district of Wuhan City, next to the recently opened French consulate. The hotel will have 314 rooms, a variety of food and beverage outlets, function rooms, and a wide variety of leisure and entertainment facilities.

Commenting on the expansion plans, Accor Managing Director for Asia, Mr Anthony Young, said that China had shown the resilient nature of its economy over the past few years and prospects for growth in business and leisure travel continued to look healthy.

Our strategy has been to expand in key regional centres over the past two years, and we will continue this policy while looking to expand the network in Shanghai and Beijing as well, said Mr Young.

Novotel has become a well-established name in China, as has Sofitel, but we will also introduce our mid-market brands Mercure and Ibis if the opportunity arises.

A key advantage that the Accor group has in China is the popularity of the companys brands in Europe, which is the major growth sector for investment and business travel into China.

To oversee Accors expansion in China, Gerhard Zimmer has been appointed as Director of Operations for China. Mr Zimmer was the General Manager of the Sofitel Hyland Shanghai.

Accor is the worlds largest hotel, tourism and services company. It operates 3,000 hotels across the globe as well as being a leader in car rental, travel agency, catering and other tourism services. In China, Accors current portfolio comprises: Sofitel Hyland Shanghai, Novotel Shanghai Yuan Lin, Novotel Hefei, Novotel Hangzhou and Novotel International Hotel Zhengzhou.

Sofitel and Novotel Hotels Join Asia Miles
30 July 1999: Accor's flagship brands - the deluxe Sofitel and business-class Novotel brands - are the first European-based global hotel brands to join Asia Miles, Asia Miless most exciting travel reward programme.

Under the programme, over 450 Sofitel and Novotel hotels around the world will be included, with guests earning Asia Miles for stays at participating hotels and resorts.

It is the first time that Novotel has participated in a global frequent flyer programme, and reflects the growing influence of the Asia-Pacific region on Accor's global development strategies.

Asia Miles members will receive 500 Asia Miles for every stay at a Sofitel and 250 Asia Miles for a stay at a Novotel (when staying at a qualifying corporate rate or above).

To launch the programme, 13 Sofitel hotels and resorts in Asia are offering double Asia Miles for members for stays until 15 October. Asia Miles members will also be able to receive credits at over 50 Novotel hotels and resorts in Asia Pacific before the official global launch on 1 October 1999.

Asia Miles offers the fastest and easiest way for travellers to earn free flights and has one of the most extensive range of air and non-air partners of any Asian frequent flyer programme. Air-partners include oneworld alliance members Cathay Pacific Airways, British Airways, American Airlines, Canadian Airlines, and Qantas Airways. The impressive list of non-air partners includes companies from the financial services, telecommunications, and travel industries.

French-based Accor is placing great emphasis on the expansion of the deluxe Sofitel brand. Currently, the network comprises over 120 hotels and resorts, with major new developments underway in key cities such as New York, Chicago, London, Berlin and Paris. The brand is also expanding rapidly in Asia, with new Sofitels under development in China and India.

Novotel is Europe's best known 'business class' hotel brand, and is also the most widely represented of the Accor brands in Asia-Pacific, with over 50 hotels located in Thailand, Indonesia, Korea, China, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia.

Commenting on the launch of the company's involvement in Asia Miles, Accor Asia Pacific Chairman, David Baffsky, said that Accor had established an excellent relationship with Cathay Pacific and was participating with the carrier on a number of projects.

"Asia is recovering strongly after the recent crisis and Accor considers the region as a priority in its global development strategy," said Mr Baffsky. "In addition to expanding our own hotel networks, we will be working closely with other key Asian global tourism operators such as, Cathay Pacific, to provide the most relevant and comprehensive service possible to our guests."
