Sol Melia Developing Tourism Projects on the Island of Tenerife in the Spanish Canary Islands
Projects include a two-stage enlargement of the Gran Meliá Bahía del Duque
in Adeje and the development of a new golf resort in Isora
June 14, 1999 - The Chairman of Sol Meliá, Gabriel Escarrer, together with Enrique Hernándis, representative of the company named Inversiones Hoteleras Playa del Duque, have announced their intention to form a new company to jointly develop several tourism projects in the south of the island of Tenerife in the Spanish Canary Islands. The proposed projects will involve an estimated investment of more than 43,000 million pesetas (more than 258 million euros) and will be developed over a six year period.

The Spanish hotel company will hold a 23.75% share in the project development company and will be responsible for the management of the properties on their completion.

The projects are all superior quality accommodations, beginning with the two new facilities that will extend room availability at the Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque Gran Meliá in Adeje, later to be joined by the development of a new resort complex in the region of Guía de Isora. The new resort will focus on golf and water sports and will provide an 18-hole golf course, five hotels, an aparthotel and four residential villa areas.

The participating companies both aim to focus development in Spain on incorporating a number of select, superior quality products. In the case of Sol Meliá, this objective has been further enhanced by significant investments in improvements to its existing properties.

The construction of the new facilities will generate around 1,300 new jobs in Tenerife directly, along with the employment that will also be created indirectly by their operation and through their construction.

As a complement to the announced development, Sol Meliá is also planning the creation of a training and development facility for employees destined for the new facilities, as well as for other company properties throughout the Canary Islands.

Extension of the Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque Gran Meliá

The first of the projects to get under way will be the extension of the Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque Gran Meliá, a luxury hotel located in the region of Adeje owned by the local company Luís Zamorano Tais and Sol Meliá, and winner of numerous awards during its six years in operations, including being recently voted amongst the ten top hotels in the world. The project consists of the two-stage development of two new hotels, the Mirador del Duque and the Altos del Duque. On their completion, the three hotels will form part of an integrated, superior quality resort complex.

The Mirador del Duque will be built alongside the sea on a plot of land adjacent to the Bahía del Duque Gran Meliá and will provide a total of 110 luxury rooms. The Altos del Duque will be built on a hillside overlooking the existing hotel, with spectacular views of the sea and direct access to the beach, and will provide a total of 250 rooms. In both cases, the architectural style, decoration and services offered to guests will be on a par with the quality standards currently provided by the Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque Gran Meliá.
New resort complex in Guía de Isora

Finally, the Grupo Inversiones Hoteleras Playa del Duque and Sol Meliá will develop a new resort complex consisting of several types of accommodation facilities and extensive golf and water sports facilities in the region of Guía de Isora, also in the south of Tenerife.

The resort will provide an 18-hole golf course and Club House, as well as hotels, an aparthotel and residential villas, all providing a total of over 1,200 rooms.

The resort will include a 700 room hotel alongside the beach and golf course in a new tourism destination known as Punta Blanca.
The projects announced will involve an investment of more than 43,000 million pesetas, the creation of 1,300 new jobs and a total of 4,550 hotel beds.
