June, 1999 - Sol Meliá has announced the purchase
of The Crowne Plaza Reforma Hotel, one of the most modern hotels in its
category in Mexico D.F., after paying a total of 8,000 million pesetas
- 48 million euros �. The five-star, 490 room hotel will be known as the
Meliá Mexico Reforma from today.
According to the Vice Chairman of Sol Meliá, Sebastián Escarrer, �the acquisition of the Meliá Mexico Reforma, the company�s first hotel in Mexico D.F., is just one of the significant investments that are foreseen within the acquisition plan that the company is currently working on all over the world. This represents another step in our expansion and diversification strategy in Latin America and the Caribbean, one of the objectives of which is to consolidate the Sol Meliá presence in the major cities of the region�. He adds that �this new hotel, together with the recently inaugurated Gran Meliá Caracas (Venezuela) and Meliá Confort Buenos Aires (Argentina), mean we now have a total of 54 hotels in the region, of which 20 are city hotels located in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Uruguay and Venezuela�. The purchase of the Meliá Mexico Reforma also means that the Spanish company is able to commence operations in one of the most important political and financial centres on the continent, while also increasing the Sol Meliá hotel portfolio in Mexico to 10 properties, located in Cancun, Los Cabos, Cozumel, Ixtapa, Puerto Vallarta and now Mexico D.F Sol Meliá, the leading hotel company in Latin America and the Caribbean Sol Meliá is currently the leading hotel company in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Meliá Mexico Reforma: The Meliá Mexico Reforma, Sol Meliá�s first city hotel in Mexico, provides a total of 490 rooms - around 1,000 beds -, all equipped with modern facilities and amenities such as a modem hook-up for business travellers. The hotel has previously been managed by the hotel company Bass International under its Crowne Plaza hotel brand, and enjoys an excellent central location, on the famous Paseo de la Reforma, near the historical commercial and business heart of the capital. The hotel provides a modern Business Centre, 4 convention halls and 8 meeting rooms; over 1,700 square metres of meeting space in total, with capacities for 20 to 2,000 guests, and suitable for the widest range of events.
