February 9, 1999 - Smith Travel Research (STR) released the attached
annual update of the 30 largest U.S. markets based on the total number
of hotel rooms.
The top eight markets remained the same, but there was some shifting of positions among most of the other markets. The biggest jump in rank was Denver, from 27th last year to 21st at the end of 1998. Houston and Phoenix both moved three places, going from 12th to 9th and 14th to 11th, respectively. Riverside-San Bernardino dropped off the list due to STR now treating the Palm Springs area as a separate market. Fort Lauderdale moved up two notches to the 29th position, and Atlantic City made the list for the first time. Overall, the 30 largest hotel markets contain 1,364,200 rooms, which represents 37 percent of all the 3.7 million rooms in the United States. The net change from 1997 to 1998 was an increase of 27,400 rooms, which was only 20 percent of the overall net increase of 134,400 rooms in the total U.S. inventory. |
