LAS VEGAS, March 5, 1999 - Visitor volume to Las Vegas in
January 1999 increased 7.4 percent over the same period a year ago, according
to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA). It was the
largest monthly increase since December 1995.
Convention attendance jumped 28.7 percent in January 1999. Combined hotel and motel occupancy was 83.7 percent, up 3.1 points. Taken separately, January's hotel occupancy was 88.5 percent, up 3.6 points. The total number of passengers traveling through Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport increased by 9.1 percent, and automobile traffic from Southern California was up 3.2 percent. Supported by the widely publicized opening of Bellagio in October 1998, Las Vegas posted strong visitor volume increases throughout the fall and winter months: 2.8 percent in September, 4.9 percent in October, 1.7 percent in November, 6.7 percent in December and 7.4 percent in January. This year will see the opening of four major resorts in Las Vegas. Mandalay Bay and the Four Seasons opened their joint Strip property on March 2. The Venetian Resort and The Resort at Summerlin are both scheduled to open in April. Hilton's Paris resort debuts in September 1999. Together, these properties add more than 10,000 rooms to the market. |
