March, 1999 - The emblematic five-star Melia Bali Hotel
has been awarded the Green Globe Commendation 1999 by the World Travel
and Tourism Council. The President of Green Globe, Bob Collier, will present
the award to the General Manager of the Melia Bali, Daniel Lozano, in a
ceremony on Wednesday at the ITB tourism trade fair in Berlin.
Inaugurated by Sol Melia in 1995, the Melia Bali was the first hotel to be built in the Balinese region of Nusa Dua, and this award is in recognition of the important role that the hotel has played from the very beginning in the conservation of the natural environment in this beautiful corner of south east Asia. For the Chairman of Sol Melia, Gabriel Escarrer, we are tremendously proud of this award given that the Melia Bali has always been a model of our policy with regard to environmental management and sustainable tourism development. It is a great honour, bearing in mind that the hotel was built during the 1980s, that our first international hotel should be singled out for its successful environmental programmes. The future of the hotel industry, he adds, must be based on the development of fully integrated resorts. The natural beauty of a tourism destination represents tremendous added value, and these natural resources must be respected and taken into account in the design and operations of new hotel projects. Following the guidelines in the Sol Melia Environmental Protection Manual, the Melia Bali has implemented a sophisticated environmental management programme that includes, amongst other things, waste recycling, energy saving, sound pollution reduction and the use of environmentally-friendly products and materials. In recent months, moreover, the hotel has introduced several measures related to the conservation of its natural environment, including the creation of the first biological garden in Nusa Dua, eliminating the use of pesticides and fertilisers, and the launch of Project Fly which aims to rescue injured birds and nurse them back to health before releasing them back into the wild. Along with the Melia Bali, other Sol Meli· hotels such as the
Melia Bavaro in the Dominican Republic, the Sol Club FalcÛ in Minorca
in Spain and the Melia Cancun in Mexico have also obtained international
awards for their commitment to the protection of the natural environment.
