FAIRFAX, Va - Jan. 12, 1999--Mobil Corporation today announced
six first-time and 38 repeat recipients of the coveted Mobil Travel Guide
Five-Star Award and 372 Mobil Four-Star Award winners.
The honorees represent a select group chosen from over 22,000 lodging
and dining establishments earning Mobil Star ratings in the 1999 volumes
of the Mobil Travel Guide.
"We congratulate the recipients of the 1999 Mobil Five-Star and Four-Star
Awards," said Lucio A. Noto, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Mobil
Corporation. "These prestigious awards recognize the top lodging and dining
properties in North America for their commitment to excellence, consistent
quality and leadership in a demanding industry. They have raised expectations
and set standards that increase enjoyment and provide new experiences for
today's discerning traveler."
Six New Mobil Five-Star Winners - 33 Fewer
Mobil Four-Star Winners
In 1999, 26 lodgings and 18 restaurants earned Mobil Five- Star designations
by demonstrating superiority in every facet of their operations, attending
to every detail and consistently offering guests a memorable, one-of-a-kind
experience. Among the 44 elite establishments receiving Mobil Travel Guide's
highest accolade are six first-time winners:
Inn Links at Spanish Bay, Pebble Beach, CA; |
Four Seasons, Palm Beach, FL; |
Trump International Hotel Tower, New York, NY; |
The French Laundry, Yountville, CA; |
Le Cirque 2000, New York, NY; |
Jean Georges, New York, NY. |
This year, 372 establishments, compared with 405 last year, earned the
very desirable Mobil Four-Star rating, which signifies that they are "outstanding"
and "worth a special trip." Editors note that over the past several years
the Mobil Four-Star award has become increasingly difficult to earn as
the standards for excellence are rising among restaurants and lodgings
throughout North America in this competitive category.
Benchmark for Excellence
"The Mobil Travel Guide has consistently focused on the needs and expectations
of travelers and diners," said Mark A. Jacobson, Program Advisor for Mobil
Corporation. Since its beginning in 1958, the Mobil Travel Guide uses an
objective set of criteria, unique among leading travel books, that sets
national standards yet allows for regional and individual preferences.
A carefully selected team of culinary and hospitality experts evaluates
the establishments listed in the Mobil Travel Guide. Restaurants and lodgings
must offer a level of experience appropriate to the cost, based on the
quality of such items as food, decor, comfort, amenities, service or a
combination of the above. The rating criteria for each star-level are specific,
but are revised as needed to accurately reflect the changing tastes and
expectations of travelers. "Over the years, these standards have become
benchmarks for excellence in the travel industry," continued Jacobson.
Among the longest running Mobil Five-Star recipients are The Broadmoor
in Colorado Springs, CO (39 years), The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs,
WV (38 years), Maisonette in Cincinnati, OH (35 years), The Carlyle in
New York, NY (31 years) and Marriott's Camelback Inn in Scottsdale, AZ
(30 years).
