ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. and LAS VEGAS, Jan. 13, 1999 -
Boyd Gaming Corporation (NYSE: BYD) today unveiled "The Borgata(TM)" as
the name and concept for a major new casino resort on the H-Tract in the
Marina district of Atlantic City. The Borgata(TM), which is Italian
for "village," will convey an inviting warmth and comfort associated with
the timeless tradition and feel of Tuscany, Italy and Southern Europe.
The Borgata(TM) will be a $750 million entertainment resort complex with 1,500 guest rooms and suites, 120,000 square-feet of gaming space and a variety of other first-class resort and guest amenities. The Borgata(TM) will adjoin Mirage's planned resort complex on the H-Tract. Groundbreaking for The Borgata(TM) is scheduled for fall 1999, with an opening slated for mid-2002. The Borgata(TM) will add another dimension to the Atlantic City experience combining a high-energy, contemporary feel with European styling. The Borgata(TM) will feature eight restaurants, multiple retail outlets, a European health spa, a performing arts theater and a nightclub to appeal to an active and diverse customer base. The casino will have 120 table games and 3,000 slot machines. "Our entrance into the Atlantic City market is a significant milestone in our strategic plan to own and operate properties in core U.S. gaming markets," said William S. Boyd, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Boyd Gaming. "We have begun assembling an extremely talented team of professionals
to make The Borgata(TM) a rich entertainment experience. At The Borgata(TM),
we want to create the ambiance of an Italian village reflective of what
Italy is today, a balance of traditional and contemporary settings, set
to a high- energy beat. The complex will offer an array of amenities
including a wonderful variety of restaurants, distinctive retail boutiques
and, of course, exciting casino action. We intend to attract visitors
to Atlantic City who never before considered it a true entertainment resort
destination."
Boyd Gaming also announced two executive appointments relating to The
Borgata(TM). Robert L. Boughner was named Chief Executive Officer
of The Borgata(TM), and Kevin J. Sullivan was named Vice President and
Project Manager. Mr. Boughner, 45, has been with Boyd Gaming for 23 years
and will continue to serve as Senior Executive Vice President and Chief
Operating Officer of Boyd Gaming. Mr. Sullivan, 45, is currently
Boyd Gaming's Vice
