Sheraton San Diego Hotel Marina Spins Off  346 Rooms to Create The Westin Harbor Island

SEATTLE, Feb. 9, 1999 -  The west tower of the Sheraton San Diego Hotel Marina complex will be converted to The Westin Harbor Island effective Feb. 15. Built as two separate hotels on San Diego Bay, the hotels have operated jointly under the Sheraton flag since 1972. The 700-room east tower will remain the Sheraton Harbor Island. Both hotels are owned by Starwood Hotels Resorts Worldwide, Inc., parent company of Sheraton and Westin, which also owns The Westin Horton Plaza in downtown San Diego.

According to General Manager Joe Terzi, "We have a unique complex here on Harbor Island which is ideally suited to support both upscale brands which often appeal to different customers. This arrangement allows us to extend our services and facilities to an even wider range of customers."

The Mobil Four-Star, AAA Four Diamond complex is located at the water's edge on the San Diego Bay, central to all San Diego has to offer -- the San Diego Zoo, the pristine beaches, golf courses, historic Old Town, Balboa Park and its Old Globe Theater, Sea World, the convention center and the historic Gaslamp District.

The Westin Harbor Island has 346 oversized guest rooms and suites, 14,000 square feet of meeting space, its own restaurant and lobby lounge, swimming pool and business services. In addition, its guests also have access to all of the services and facilities at the nearby Sheraton which is just a short stroll away and accessible via a scenic walkway along the marina. These facilities include Harbor's Edge, a Brasserie-style restaurant; more than 66,000 square feet of function space; outdoor recreation center with volleyball, biking and boating; full-service spa and fitness center; four outdoor tennis courts; three tropical lagoon pools with bar and grill; lobby lounge; sports bar; and the Aroma Cafe serving baked goods, sandwiches, salads and specialty coffees.

The Westin Harbor Island features all the standard upscale amenities and services provided by Westin hotels. Each room offers a private balcony with water view, in-room coffee maker featuring Starbucks coffee, dual-line speakerphone with data port and voice mail, 25" television with cable, iron and ironing board, honor bar and refrigerator, hair dryer and the popular Westin pillows.

Guests at The Westin Harbor Island will enjoy additional benefits unique to Westin. For an additional $20 per night the hotel offers Westin Guest Office(R) accommodations which double as offices. Each room features an in-room multifunction laser printer/fax/copier, dual line speaker phone with data port, Macintosh and IBM-compatible computer printer cable and surge protector, ergonomically correct desk chair, task lamp, complimentary newspaper and free local phone calls. Service Express(R), a "one call does it all" concept exclusive to Westin hotels and resorts allows guests to dial one number on their telephone to order room service, call for a bellman or room attendant or have any other request filled. Additionally, Westin keeps in mind the special needs of families traveling with children with its Westin Kids Club(R) program. The club includes provisions for children's safety and security as well as conveniences designed to make overnight and dining experiences more enjoyable for both parents and children.

Guests who stay at either The Westin Harbor Island or the Sheraton Harbor Island San Diego will be able to earn their way toward free travel in Starwood's new frequent guest program, Starwood Preferred Guest. With more than 550 participating hotels and resorts in more than 60 countries, including 100 resorts around the world, the new program is the industry's most global and promises to be the best of the competition with a structure focused on simplicity, flexibility in redemption options and inclusion of all of Starwood's brands.
