Conde Nast Reader's Choice Poll Ranks New Orleans's Windsor Court #1 in the U.S.

NEW ORLEANS, Oct. 20, 1998 -  The 12th annual Conde Nast Reader's Choice poll, is in from the most traveled people in the world. In its Best of the Best 1998 poll, #1 is the Silversea Cruise Line. #2 is Windsor Court Hotel, which ranks the Hotel #1 in the world. The poll appears in the November issue of Conde Nast Traveler.

The world rank also makes Windsor Court #1 in the U.S. thanks to 37,293 readers, who gave it the highest overall rating among Hotels in the world. Hotels are judged in the categories of rooms, service, food, and location. Only the Windsor Court ranked over 90 percent in all four areas. Managing Director Hansjoerg Maissen was taken by surprise. "I have always felt we were among the best," he said, "but after winning the #1 spot in America in 1995, I really didn't expect to rank above two or three this year." The new poll makes the Windsor Court the only Hotel in America to win the #1 spot on the U.S. list three times.

"These two distinctions demonstrate that Orient-Express Hotels' commitment to the best in hospitality is recognized by sophisticated world travelers," said Dean Andrews, Vice President, Director of Operations OEH North America. "We congratulate managing Director Hans Maissen and his dedicated team of professionals, for exceeding guests' highest expectations and upholding Windsor Court's long standing tradition of excellence."

In the center of the New Orleans business district, only one block from its famous French Quarter,
stands its finest property - The Windsor Court Hotel. In October 1998, the Windsor Court Hotel
was voted #1 Hotel in the World by the readers of Condé Nast magazine.
A parade was held to celebrate the award, followed by a News Conference led by Mayor Marc Morial. Staff was allowed the rare privilege of leaving guests for twenty minutes to come to the courtyard for the festivities. A champagne toast followed, and each of the five hundred employees received a cash bonus to mark the new world rating.

This has been a banner year for the Hotel. In January, the Grill Room restaurant, located on the second floor lobby was awarded the rare Mobil Five Star rating, making it the only restaurant in Louisiana to carry the distinction. "We will proudly carry our newest rating to our guests in the form of service and ambiance," said Maissen. Since opening its doors during the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition, the exclusive property and gourmet restaurant have created a reputation of elegance and luxury, catering to affluent travelers, stars, and celebrities.
