LAS VEGAS, Dec. 10, 1998 - Visitor volume to Las Vegas
increased 4.9 percent in October 1998 compared with the same period a year
ago, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA).
It was the highest monthly increase the destination has experienced since
April 1997.
Total room occupancy was also strong in October, increasing 2.3 points
to 89.4 percent. At the
same time, Las Vegas has experienced a 5.6 percent increase in room inventory.
The destination now boasts more than 109,000 rooms. In addition, the October
gaming revenues for Clark County were up by 11.7 percent.
"October has traditionally been a strong month for Las Vegas," said
Manny Cortez, president and CEO of the LVCVA. "Visitor volume is one of
the key gauges of our success, and our goal is to achieve steady increases
along with the citywide growth in room inventory."
October was a busy month in Las Vegas. Bellagio was the first new resort
to open on the Strip in two years, and the destination hosted spectators
and PGA players for the 16th annual Las Vegas Invitational golf tournament,
as well as for other special events.
There were incremental visitor volume increases throughout the summer
and early fall, as the LVCVA engaged in an aggressive seasonal advertising
campaign. The $5 million marketing program encouraged spontaneous trips
to Las Vegas and positioned Southern Nevada as America's leading resort
destination. |
