December 29, 1998 - Richard Geiger, president and CEO of the Greater Buffalo Convention & Visitors Bureau, has been appointed to a two-year term on the New York State Tourism Advisory Council effective January 1999.

Assemblyman Paul A. Tokasz, chairman of the Assembly Committee on Tourism, Arts & Sports Development, nominated Geiger as one of three appointments designated by the Honorable Sheldon Silver, speaker of the State Assembly

Geiger, head of the states second largest CVB since July 1995, is the first CVB president from Western New York to serve as an advisor on the  Assemblys 18-member Tourism Council.

In his nomination of Geiger, Assemblyman Tokasz said, Geigers strong leadership and aggressive tourism promotion strategies have galvanized the Western New York community in a way that will benefit the entire region. He is progressive, refreshingly frank and I have found his advice is founded in a sound knowledge of the tourism industry and global trends, which will all prove to be an asset to the New York State Tourism Advisory Council.

The New York State Tourism Advisory Council, which was revamped in 1984, is empowered to advise the commissioner governing tourism and to serve as a liaison between the states tourism-related industries and commissioner with respect to the design and implementation of the states tourism polices and programs.
