Can a $4,400 Per Night Hotel Room be Worth it?

Conde Nast Traveler Says `Yes' and Puts the Bungalows at
Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows on the Cover

KONA KOHALA COAST, Hawaii, Aug. 28, 1998 -  The cover of the September issue of Conde Nast Traveler shows a girl in a swimming pool gazing at the ocean beyond. Inside the magazine, the pool and its surroundings are featured on six pages as the question, "Could any bungalow on earth be worth $4,400 a night," is answered. The reply is a resounding "Yes," as the writer goes on to describe a truly pampered two-day stay in an exclusive Bungalow at the AAA Five Diamond Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows.

Don Dickhens, Mauna Lani's general manager says, "The Bungalows are in great demand and almost always sold out. We've even had guests ask for floor plans so they can build their own dream Bungalow. Our longest Bungalow stay has been 60 days, and our most unusual guest was Andre the Seal, whose butler filled his private pool with salt water during his stay."

Everyone who has a Bungalow visit gets "Bungalow Fever" -- a condition exemplified by the inability to leave their haven. The Bungalows were featured in the March issue of the San Francisco Examiner Magazine where travel editor John Flinn ended his article with, "Go ahead and call the SWAT team if you must. I'm not leaving. Ever."

Diversion magazine featured "The Butler Did It -- The Case of the Big Island Bungalow Blowout," and Departures put the Bungalows on the map in 1992 with a huge spread called "Splendid Isolation." Each of the five private Bungalows is as distinct and different as the Hawaiian flower that bears its name.

A Bungalow is 4,000 square feet with a living room, dining room, kitchen, foyer, two master bedrooms and baths (each with a Jacuzzi tub and steam shower), a guest bath, a full lanai, and a private swimming pool and outdoor whirlpool surrounded by a fully stocked fish pond. Round-the clock butler service, premium bar, continental breakfast and afternoon cocktails with hors d'oeuvres are included. The Bungalows are in a gated, private cul-du-sac which is separate from the main hotel.

There is a $24,000 Bungalow Package available with air mileage points.

The Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows is the only AAA Five Diamond hotel on Hawaii's Big Island. It is located 25 minutes north of the Kona International Airport on the Kona Kohala Coast. A part of the 3,200-acre Mauna Lani Resort, it is a member of the Pan Pacific Hotels and Resorts and is affiliated with Preferred Hotels Resorts Worldwide.
