Best Western Scholarship Invests in Industry's Future

Phoenix, Ariz., Jan. 5, 1997--- The next generation of hotel leaders is gaining a stronger financial footing with the introduction of a new partnership. A first-of-its-kind scholarship established by Best Western International, Inc., is designed to assist emerging female hospitality professionals in the completion of their academic requirements and ready them for transition into their careers.

The hotel giant begins the commitment with a multi-year pledge underwriting three scholarships awarded by the Network of Executive Women in Hospitality (NEWH), Arizona Chapter.

"Each year NEWH assesses applications from hospitality and tourism students attending Arizona colleges and universities," says Markie Rhoads, the founder of the Arizona NEWH Chapter."The enthusiasm and talent these developing professionals display sends a distinctive message: women will be high performers in the hotels of tomorrow. The dilemma is how to help these young folks achieve their dream while they struggle with the increasing cost of a college education."

Drawing on their organization's long-standing tradition of community involvement, Best Western officials decided to offer NEWH a seed-fund commitment to encourage similar contributions.

"As a not-for-profit association our capacity for philanthropic activities relies heavily on creativity and is then supported with targeted donations," explains Gillian Silver, director of Public Relations for Best Western.

"The lodging industry has long grappled with the frustration that women are not ascending into the upper ranks of hotel-level and hotel corporation management," she says. "The activities of NEWH are very positive, and enriching and its members are a tribute to the many satisf~ring career options women may pursue. Through this gifi, we at Best Western are offering our endorsement of the group's fine work."

NEWH is a national nonprofit group founded in 1984 to serve its members and the industry through scholarship, fund raising, education efforts and information exchange.

Best Western International, Inc., is a membership-driven organization that has supported hoteliers with a variety of services to ensure competitive pricing, quality accommodations and consistent dedication to guest satisfaction for 51 years.
