Outrigger Hotels & Resorts launches $10 million airfare promotion to stimulate Hawaii travel

Honolulu, Hawaii USA-August 13, 1997 - Outrigger Hotels & Resorts, Hawaii's leading lodging company, today unveiled a promotion offering $10 million in Hawaii airfare savings beginning September 7.

According to Rob Solomon, Outrigger's senior vice president of sales and marketing, "Outrigger is taking a leadership role in promoting travel to Hawaii. We decided it was time to generate new ideas to entice travelers to the Islands, and especially to Waikiki. We believe Outrigger's $10 Million Hawaii Airfare Promotion will break through the clouds of confusion in the marketplace. With over 9,000 guest rooms in the Hawaii, we're making a major commitment to this program. It's also our best way of thanking travel agents and tour operators who have supported Outrigger for fifty years. The Outrigger $10 Million Hawaii Airfare Promotion offers travelers an instant savings of up to $150 on qualifying air-inclusive wholesale packages with Outrigger Hotels. Customers take their coupons, which will appear in newspaper ads, to any travel agent for credit. The travel agent books any qualifying Outrigger package with a participating wholesaler and the discount applies at the time of deposit.

Solomon said he believes the consumer will like the offer because the Outrigger Airfare Credit of up to $150 applies to any airline with any qualifying Outrigger package. "It is an immediate benefit for the consumer since the discount applies at the time of deposit," said Solomon. "The Outrigger Airfare Coupon represents a substantial savings and the offer is very credible because it can be used with most published rates. We're fully prepared to apply the entire $10 million in credits to stimulate the marketplace.

"Travel agents will appreciate the promotion's concept because it will drive consumers to their agency," Solomon continued. "The promotion is simple. It's also flexible because the agent can use their preferred wholesaler. The offer of an instant $50 - $150 savings should help the agent seal the deal."

To gain maximum momentum for the promotion, Outrigger has planned an advertising campaign that starts with newspaper ads breaking on September 7 in major West Coast cities, with magazine ads and newspaper inserts following shortly thereafter. The promotion will also include extensive distribution of pre-printed coupons to travel agents throughout North America and Canada as well as direct marketing and point-of-sale promotion with partners. "The coupons can be used by travel agents to offer clients, who may be unfamiliar with the promotion, an immediate $50 - $150 saving when they book a qualifying package -- thus making the travel agent a hero to their client for saving them some extra money," Solomon said.

Further plans call for the promotion to be included on Outrigger's Internet website. Web users will have an opportunity to download a coupon for redemption at their travel agency when booking Outrigger packages.

Outrigger's $10 Million Hawaii Airfare Promotion is valid on new bookings arriving September 1,1997 through January 27,1998.

Blackout dates are from December 19 to 31,1997. A 5-night minimum stay is required and the promotion cannot be combined with any other Outrigger discount offer. Only one coupon accepted per 5-night booking. All reservations must be identified at the time of booking.

Outrigger Hotels & Resorts is Hawaiis largest hotel company and the 28th largest in the U.S., offering 29 hotels and resort condominiums throughout the Hawaiian Islands and the Pacific, with projects under development in Guam, Palau, Tahiti, Fiji and the Cook Islands.
