Morrissey and Hewes Elected to Top Posts at Upper Midwest Hospitality, Inc.

June 12, 1997 - William Morrissey, president of Morrissey Hospitality Companies, Inc., a hospitality consulting firm, and Arnold J. Hewes, CAE, executive vice president of the Minnesota Restaurant, Hotel and Resort Associations, have been elected to one-year terms as chairman and president, respectively, of Upper Midwest Hospitality, Inc., the corporate umbrella for the Minnesota Restaurant, Hotel and Resort Associations.

More than 3,700 restaurants, hotels, motels, bed & breakfasts, resorts, campgrounds and allied businesses comprise the membership of the three associations. They share professional management and a staff of 18, while having their own boards of directors, committees and programs. In addition to managing the three associations, Upper Midwest Hospitality also manages one of the largest regional trade shows of its kind in the country, the Upper Midwest Hospitality Restaurant & Lodging Show (UP Show), slated for February 1-3, 1998 at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

As Chairman of the Board, Morrissey will provide overall direction to the growing organization. Upper Midwest Hospitality has undertaken a five-year public relations effort to further build recognition as the voice of the hospitality industry and to demonstrate the economic impact of hospitality on Minnesota's economy. The hospitality industry is the second largest employer in Minnesota with over 175,000 employees and annual sales of nearly $9 billion.

Morrissey, general manager of the St. Paul Hotel, earned a degree in hospitality/food service management from the University of Minnesota and worked his way up the industry ladder, in positions including bellman, desk clerk, food preparation and sales. Morrissey Hospitality Companies, Inc., employs over 400 people.

Morrissey has served as Chairman of the Hospitality Education Committee of the Minnesota Restaurant, Hotel and Resort Associations, as well as serving on the Hospitality Legislative Committee. He has also been active in a number of civic activities and boards, including the St. Paul Urban Design Committee, Civic Center Building Task Force, St. Paul Chamber of Commerce, St. Paul and Eagan Convention and Visitors' Bureaus and the St. Paul Downtown Council.

Hewes is the president and chief executive officer of Upper Midwest Hospitality, Inc. A Certified Association Executive (CAE), he has provided the solid leadership and long-term vision that has guided the organization's growth for the past 18 years. He manages a staff of 18 in departments ranging from government affairs to communications to education. Hewes has dramatically increased the visibility and growth of the Minnesota Restaurant, Hotel and Resort Associations and coordinated the recent mergers of the Minnesota Bed & Breakfast Guild with the Minnesota Hotel and Lodging Association and the state's campgrounds with the Minnesota Resort Association. Currently, the Minnesota Resort Association, with the merger of campgrounds, has 1100 members; the Hotel & Lodging Association, with the merger of bed and breakfasts, has a membership of 700; and the Restaurant Association has 1,600 members. The three associations also have 400 allied supplier members.

On the national level, Hewes currently serves as a Trustee for the American Hotel & Motel Association's
Educational Institute. He is the only state executive to have served as president of both the International Society of Hotel Association Executives (ISHAE) and the International Society of Restaurant Association Executives
