Phoenix, Ariz., Oct. 27, 1997 - Iowa hotelier and 16-year industry veteran John R. Van Duyn has been elected to the board of directors of Best Western International. Inc., the world's largest hotel brand. Van Duyn assumed his seat on the global board this week during the brand's regular October leadership meeting here at the organization's international headquarters. He is the first Iowa hotelier to serve on the board in 33 years.
Van Duyn, who entered the hospitality industry in 1982, operates the popular Best Western Dubuque Inn a 155-room hotel in Dubuque, Iowa. In his new position he represents 342 Best Western hotels in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas
A Best Western member since 1978, Van Duyn has been active in the lodging giant's structure serving in various capacities and on committees such as the Executive Marketing Advisory Committee and the Affinity Advisory Board. Van Duyn is known as well for his extensive contributions and leadership contributions to the National Tour Association. A widely recognized expert in the motorcoach market, his accomplishments have earned him the Iowa Hotelier of the Year Award and the Dubuque Jaycee's Boss of the Year distinction, among other honors.
Best Western is governed by a seven-member board elected from geographic districts within North America. Directors may serve two three-year terms.
Van Duyn holds a degree in political science from the University of Iowa.
